New Corolla? Short Trip? break in period?

My question is,

Is it ok to take a small road trip during break in period?
Like from Edmonton to Calgary on a weekend?

In a ideal world, not so good. Since highway driving is very constant speed, rpm doesn't have lots of ups and downs. The best way to break in an engine is with various rpm range, but keep it under 4K if possible, key is not to rev it high. And do oil change in the first 5K, not 8K.

As long as you are varying your RPM speeds, you will be fine. Don't use cruise control very much during the break in period. Take some back roads. Drive through some towns if you can. If you can't do any of these, I would wait until the break in period is over before going on a road trip.

Break in period is 1000 miles (about 1600 kilometers)

I bought my 2010 corolla in GA and had 350 mi drive back home to FL. I drove on hwy at 70 - 75mph with cruise control and did not have any issues. When my car had 400 miles on it I had to take 600 mile road trip and drove at 70 mph for 10 hrs. I did not have any problems. I think as long as you don't exceed 4000 rpm you would be fine. I really don't see a problem driving at constant speed with a new car. I did change my factory oil at 1000 mi to Mobil 1 5W20 though...

i just drove my brand new speed3 with 3kms on the dash from calgary to edmonton, i tried to vary the speed time to time, did make one stop along the way, also the highway was flooded after red deer so that slowed traffic down which varied my speed. but honestly you should be ok, read what it says in the owners manual. i looked it up, it said that there is no break-in technique but if you want more life out of your engine do not high rev, do not cruise at a constant rpm at high or low speed for long period of time, do not full throttle etc all till you complete 1000 kms or so.

Issues would not show up right away but may lead to a shorter engine life.

Some people told me that today's engines are mostly broken in at the factory or the first 15 minutes of driving. The entire break-in period is get the rest of the car worked in. Wear in the transmssion, hubs, ball joints, sensors, brakes, fluids, etc. Having said that, I still take it easy the first 1000 or so miles and then it's WOT!

Do not maintain constant speeds and you should be fine.

Can someone explain why travelling at a constant speed is "bad" for your drivetrain? I don't really understand what a constant speed could do to the engine/transmission.

I drove from Cleveland to Pittsburgh on cruise immediately after I picked up the car, and then from Pittsburgh to Cincy later that weekend (on cruise, too). Haven't noticed any problems yet, but I've only got ~23k miles on it.

^It's more for everything in the engine to seal properly at different RPM's than anything else.
