Australia Burning question I need answered!

Hey guys,

I've been searching and searching around trying to find an answer regarding our Corollas and I hope it's either heaven or hell for me.

Okay, I hail from Australia and I pretty much have a 2008 Corolla sedan which is some what the equivalent of your base and LE models here in the US. (The pre-facelift one before the new one out now with updated lights and bumper.)

What I would like to know is, are the aftermarket parts sold in America be compatible with my car? Particularly in regards to sway bars, strut braces and exhausts. I'm looking in to purchase the Whiteline series in handling and maybe if shipping is kind which I doubt it, a Borla exhaust system.

I have raised the question to the Whiteline supplier here in Sydney but even he doesn't know and was going to do a trial fit with what parts he had with me but he seems to have dropped off the grid and haven't been answering my emails anymore.

I can't say going by pictures online doing comparisons I can be sure but can anyone (especially a Toyota knowledgable person) know whether Aussie Corollas are the same as the American Corollas?

Are the Corollas here in US made in Japan like the Australian ones?

I really hope someone out there can help it'll mean alot to me and also sorry for the long post, I finally get some car money and wanna spend it modding the handling.

Thanks in advance!

Corollas sold in the USA are either made in Japan or Canada now. 2009-2010 models were also made in California at NUMMI.

Do you know what model your Australian Corolla is? North American Corollas are the E140 series cars, which use a coil-over-spring rear suspension design, while Europe and some other regions are E150 series, which look similar, but use a different rear suspension with a separate spring and shock setup (similar to the Yaris, Scion xB -- The xB is actually an E150 series chassis).

If you have your model code and/or VIN I can check which setup you have, and can check on what is similar/the same and what is different.

Let me know.

Jeff

Thanks for the quick reply Jeff, it looks like my car is definitely an E150 series car. The model series is ZRE-152R and the cars VIN number is JTNBU56E40J007715.

Hope this helps

Cheers mate

Info about your car:

Model: ZRE152R-AEPDKQ
Frame: ZRE152-J007715
Production: 02/08
Paint: 1G3 Grey
Trim: FE12 Grey Cloth
Engine: 1.8L 2ZR-FE
Grade: D-Type
Transmission: Automatic (4-speed, U341E)
Driver's Position: RHD

You have a very different rear suspension to our model. Rear sway bars meant for Japan/North America Corolla will not fit your car. That being said, the rear axle beam is the same (42101-12171) as the 2008+ 2nd Generation Scion xB. As such, I would expect rear sway bars from the Scion xB/Rukus to fit your Corolla.

The front sway bar on your Corolla is the same as the Auris/Blade in Japan, as well as some other stuff. Nothing over here uses the exact same bar, but again I would expect most E150 parts to be interchangeable. The end links are the same, but I suspect the part number for the bar is different due to diameter/stiffness changes.

The manifold, front exhaust pipe, mid pipe and muffler section all have different part numbers compared to US-spec Japan-made vehicles. I expect this is due to a slightly different floor design/rear suspension design. I'd expect most of it to be close but not quite fit. The bumper cover itself is the same, however the rest looks (even in the diagrams) quite a bit different. That doesn't mean it won't fit though, just that it's a different design. The Australian E150 series uses separate pipes for the front/mid/rear sections of the exhaust, while the US-spec E140 series uses a single pipe from the manifold all the way back to the muffler (which is a larger-style than yours).

As far as strut braces go, the rear suspension is quite different, so I'd expect that will likely not work for you. On the front I was expecting the upper strut mounts, etc. to be the same between the E140 and E150, but it was not the case. Your upper strut mounts are the same as our Scion xB. I don't know if the bolt pattern is different as I haven't measured it. The upper bar may fit, but again I can't say 100%. The struts and fender aprons have different part numbers to ours.

The front suspension setup on your Corolla looks most similar to the Scion xB/Prius. Even the crossmember is a very different design compared to ours, with many more pieces. (Though it is the same as our xB).

Wish I could help more, but unfortunately nothing sold here is exactly the same as your car. The E150-series Corolla sedan shares the body with our E140, but the suspension/chassis is quite different.

Jeff

no i think you've done more than enough to helping me out, mate your a legend!

it's better to be clarified than going on a hunch and getting something that doesn't fit at all. especially when shipping costs as much as the item to get it sent here.

gonna message fellow aussie sedan owners who have aftermarket parts and see where they purchased them from.

thanks once again jeff!

Very interesting about the xB/Prius link. I just found out on Priuschat that the RSB for the xB fits the current Prius as they use the same rear suspension.
