Help.. Alternator or Water Pump?

I'm looking for evidence that this maybe the Alternator or the water pump.. the car is a 2009 Corolla S 1.8T with 44k miles on it.. it started this passed weekend and got worse over a trip.

Thanks,
Kelli

Wow, that sounds about how mine sounds after a weekend trip to PA. Digging into it tonight to see what's causing mine, but I also have a 1.8L 09 corolla, except i have over 65k on mine.

so i dug around last night in the engine bay and wiped down alot of stuff. couldnt find anything wrong really, then i popped the hood this afternoon... mine is definitely a water pump issue (i have nice pink crap sprayed on various bits in the engine bay).

That sounds awful. Put a screw driver against the alternator and check if that is making noise. If not its probably the water pump or tensioner.

I don't like the looks of that. Just out of warranty and something like that happens. Does not sound engine related. Check with toyota for any recalls.

tell me about it. at 61k i had my speed sensor in the rear rot through... they refused to cover it (i paid extra for full warranty coverage until 60k). Eventually after enough fighting with them they only made me pay 1/3rd of the total price. Now I called to get an estimate for the water pump, the guy immediately asked how many miles I had on my '09, as if he was shocked it needed one. But when I said 65k, his tone changed like he wasnt surprised anymore and he explained that I was out of warranty and happily gave me the price. I've opted to do the job myself, got the parts last night and today the car gets torn down.

This is by far the worst Toyota I have ever owned, it's really making me not want to buy another one after unloading this one (that moment is approaching more rapidly now). My last corolla (7th gen) could have withstood a bombing, and it would still run (although I'm sure the bodywork would be gone). It makes me wonder if they're really cutting quality or testing less--at least before the recalls that is.

Have to agree there. All of my Toyotas from the early to mid 90s were bulletproof and the quality designed and built into the cars was evident. My 2010 with only 2500 miles is a real POS and will be my last. Its easy to tell that quality at Toyota has taken a back seat to cost savings.

well mine was definitely the water pump. it wasnt too horrible to change either, i should have documented it but i didnt have the time. ended up running about 130 bucks after all the parts and such, im in the process of bleeding the air out of the lines now since my heater isnt working at this point.

surprisingly the car was very easy to work on, may have to hang on to it for a bit longer now... or i can just sell it already. only time will tell.

EDIT: i forgot to mention, the water pump has since been revised. the new one seems much beefier than the one i took off. I'm guessing it's definite a known issue since the design changed so much. This also involved getting a new bolt kit to compensate for the increased thickness of the new pump.
