Quick Concern

I have a question about my manual transmission. On two separate occasions now, while parked on a hill, my car has rolled back while still in the car. I always leave it in first gear and sometimes I don't put on the emergency brake. When I noticed this, the incline was slight but enough to make the car roll back. Has anyone else noticed this with their manual transmissions?

You should always leave the parking brake on for a manual trans...

I don't want to have the chance of my car rolling off and getting damage.

USA Quick Concern

The manual tranny does NOT lock when you are stopped, unlike the automatic. It uses engine compression to hold the vehicle and that is not enough for a lot of slopes. Use the emergency brake. It is the law is many states.

Parking in a flat surface, leaving it in gear should be fine. But whenever you park on an incline, pull your ebrake up~!

Should change your parking habit.
In a slope, turn wheel towards curb, (either forward or backward) put on ebrake and if wish put car in first gear.

Normal for most generations of Corolla and many other makes/models out there. The engine compression alone, when you park the car in gear, is not strong enough to hold the car - even for a moderate incline. As mentioned above, no locking parking pawl like an automatic to hold it. Even then, they don't recommend loading the parking pawl when parked on a steel incline, as it could be damaged from the load.

The e-brake should hold the car, assuming that it is properly adjusted. in some extreme cases, might have to change your parking technique (park with the wheels pointed toward the curb or even chock the wheels.

Yeah even with my AT everytime I park, I put the car in neutral, pull the ebrake tight and then place in park.. This way the car doesnt sit on the pawl and if the car would roll the pawl is its last resort..

Thanks for the quick replies. I have started to park with my parking brake on and the only reason I asked is because I've owned a few manuals in the past and never had an issue like that. Again thanks for correcting my stupidity.
