Keyless entry question

I recently just bought a 2010 Corolla that was previously used as a rental but didn't come with a keyless entry remote. I went to the dealership earlier today to see if I could buy one, but according to them, my car didn't have the computer or sensor or whatever piece required for the keyless entry to even work. Could this possibly be true? I mean I assumed the models would come with it already. It's an LE aswell, equipped with power windows, locks, steering, security system that comes standard (?) for the stereo. If I could get some insight it would be most helpful. Thanks

Exclamation Same for me

Man i just had the exact same thing happen to me. I bought a 2010 LE from a small time dealer and he ordered the key ($250) and took it and the car to Toyota to be cut and programed only to be told the same thing. Im wondering if it is related to our cars starting life as a rental fleet vehicle? I am a tier one supplier to Toyota and have ask a contact at the canada plant to look into this. If i get anything i will post it...

Yea they have remotes their not telling you the full story...I would ask around to other dealerships.

Simply call them, state the year and model and they should find a solution for you.

So I did some further research and it turns out some vehicles that are originally made to be part of the rental fleet have the option of not having the keyless entry module installed inside of them. I went to Toyota and they said it would cost $300 to install it. This is really interesting...

BTDT with my wife's '09 LE - we bought it brand new. If it didn't come with factory-installed KE you'll need to get a third-party system or a PIO (port-installed-option) one like I got: http://www.trdsparks.com/displaypart...&parts_id=2517

Looks like they cut the price in half for this system - it's now $50 and comes with specific installation instructions for Corollas (which you can download before you buy, BTW).

It's a complete kit, even includes the connectors to splice into the wiring harnesses. And it's designed for the Corolla - not just a universal kit.

It took me about an hour to install, but I have a lot of experience with car wiring and technical stuff. My suggestion would be to download the installation guide at the link I posted and see if it's a job you are comfortable with doing.

I may call my dealership and see why they put it a cheap after market and not that one it's the same price just factory.

I know mine did not come with keyless entry or anything but it does have power locks. So I'm hoping that will fit with no problem cause that is a good price.

But how much of a pain is it going to be to remove the aftermarket that is in there and install that one???

The one I linked is NOT a Toyota-branded factory system. It's a "port-installed-option" - an item installed by the dealership AFTER the car was built. The difference is this system has instructions on how to connect it to a Corolla and includes the parts necessary to install it.

I don't know if I'd go through all the trouble of removing what you have already to install this one.
