First time car/2010 Rolla owner here. Yeah, a newbie.
Well, I know how to parallel parking of course but once in a while I lightly bump the car behind me while fine tuning. As a result, there are some paint chips.
My question is... You experienced drivers, have you ever bump others while doing parallel parking? Any suggestion? Thanks.
Nope never, But I always get bumped by bad parkers.. Now I always park my car at the end of a street so no one can hit my bumper.. But if they hit my front thats okay since the license plate frame is there.
Just remember if you dont know how far back you are theres still room infront to pull up and do it again..
While doing parallel parking, I always lower my window to look back to see how much room I have. The only thing I hit is the curb on the right (can't see it). When I was taking driver eds, I did parallel parking perfectly (even better than corner backing up), but I don't know why it is harder for me to do this skill with my current car. It is probably because my car is bigger than the car I drove for driving test.

Not sure how its "taught" these days, But I always turn around to see where I am going. I place my right arm on the back of the passenger seat and in the process, find I am propped up a bit when twisting to do so which allows a better view too. I want to look out my back window and see my trunk/hatch and it provides a better perspective than simply relying simply on the mirrors. That doesn't work for me. From time to time I lower the passenger mirror to better see the curb, but when I started driving, none of my cars had a passenger side mirror. It only gets easier with practice

LOL best comment for the month! You sir have just made me a new signature
The way you are taught in Texas now is that you have to use signal of course and keep both hands on the wheel while using all three mirrors and also looking behind....now the new driving test to pass you test (law was just passed a year ago, thank the lord that I never had to take it as the sheriff would have scared me senseless) <<Texas police force of any kind is scary... but yeah if you dont do or let go of the steering wheel or just tap anything...you fail

It's a bit hard to judge distance both front and back in our Corollas.
You should get out to have a look if you're not sure or do what I did. Get a back-up sensor. In fact now I have both. A backup sensor and camera.
the corolla is like 10 feet long. it cant be that hard lol. know the dimensions of your vehicle and get to know your mirrors and the distances that are safe. practice makes perfect, but i've driven larger cars.

I've never bumped a car in more than 30 years of driving. You need to practice & know your car size. If you're not sure than don't park at that location, try to find an easier place to park unless you have plenty of room to fit.

yea i sorta know my car by heart which is how i park. i just sorta feel how much space and i just sorta know o.o
Stop bumping cars! Either learn to drive (park) better, get a camera, or have someone direct you. You should preferably learn how to drive better cause if you can't tell how much room you have behind your car, then you probably also do not have any idea of how far your tires are from the lines, how close your front bumper is from the car in front of you, etc.
What you need to do is either go to your local DMV and practice parallel parking (they usually have a practice spot). Also , go to an empty parking lot with chalk (or use the parking spot lines) and drive up to a line putting both of your right tires on the line. Then repeat with the left tires. Then try pulling up to a line and stopping with both front tires on the line (also try stopping just short so your front bumper doesn't pass the line). Do the same thing with the rear tires and rear bumper. NOTE: Do this at slow speeds in the parking lot.
I've never hit a car in any way, shape, or form; and I never intend to. I take great pride in my driving and car control. Sometimes on long interstate drives (if there is not traffic) I will practice driving with both right tires on the white line, then I'll move slightly to the left and drive with both tires on the dashed line (again only with no traffic around). At every stoplight I also stop with both front tires right on the stop line. Just take pride in driving and keep practicing and you'll be able to squeeze though tight spots, avoid obstacles in the road without leaving your lane, etc. (I didn't mean to come across harsh, bad drivers are a big pet peeve for me lol)
