2010 Corolla - 50k miles - Alignment?

Does the 2010 Corolla S have any rear wheel alignment or is it just the fronts? Also, should the car be checked for alignment at around 50k miles? Tires seem to be wearing OK.

If you haven't lowered it & the car isn't pulling strange along with even tire wear than I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, there are shims you can buy to set the toe and camber for the rear. Like Super said, if it isn't wearing, don't mess with it. Half the time, unless it is a REALLY good shop, they will make the alignment worse.

The one issue I hate with these cars is the front end steering is really sloppy. When going down the highway the car never tracks straight. I've read on these forums that this is a very prevalent problem with these Corollas. I must say I REALLY HATE the way the Toyota engineers designed the steering on the 2010. My 2006 Corolla was 100x better in that regards.

I think I would blame the EPS more than anything for that artificial feel, which was done for the sake of MPG. So far, I already had mine replaced under warranty.

Interesting, for me I would say the EPS in the Corolla is more precise than most hydraulic steering equipped cars I have ever driven, albeit it seems a little numb in the feedback department in comaprision but its very precise, exact opposite of sloppy.

How did you get Toyota to replace it under warranty?

I've driven many cars in my lifetime and the 2010 Corolla steering is by-far one of the worst due to that EPS. Shoot, my 1970 Oldsmobile felt better in the steering department.

+1

I've never had any of the effects that some others have noticed. The steering was a bit numb on center but after I put my 17" wheels with 225/45R17 tires & TRD springs I never noticed it ever again. I've never noticed any sloppiness in any way.

There is no sloppiness at all. That is the problem. Most cars have maybe a 1/4" or so in the wheel. The Corolla has none, so every little rut in the road that the slop would normally pick up now gets sent back tot he steering wheel.

Also, these cars are notorious for being thrown around by the wind or larger trucks. This can give the impression that the steering is off, but in actuality, it is being rocked back and forth. Go out on a nice smooth highway on a windless day with no traffic. You can let the steering wheel go and it will track straight for miles if the alignment is good.

Well I noticed the car drifting and needing constant adjustment before I did any mods I put Trd springs on n today I had Midas do an alignment. N this car drifts all over the place still. I tried at 70 mph it pulls to the left right away. I checked it at 40 mph and it pulls to the right, right away. Should I go to the dealer n have them check it out? I only have 10k miles. So definitely under warranty

If it pulls differently than it's most likely the crown of the road. If the alignment were out it should pull to the same side at both 40 & 70 mph.

Did Midas give you a printout of the alignment? If not, you may have wasted your money. Hard to say whether they did it correct or not.

Any car with low profile tires will throw you around. There is no "play" in the sidewall to compensate for poor road conditions.

The only reason I say that is the rear needs shims to get it in alignment. MANY shops do not bother doing this. They just align the front and ship it on its way. Some will tell you they could not align the rear, others will just ignore it altogether. The Midas shops around here pay $7/hour (minimum wage) plus commission on the work, so it is in the best interest of the guy doing the alignment to get it out the door as fast as possible and get the next car in.

I had a Subaru. Took it to what I thought was a good shop for 3 years having it aligned on a regular basis. I changed the front struts and took it in for an alignment. They had no clue how to set the camber. Told me it couldn't be adjusted. I literally had to take it apart in front of them and show them how it is done. Then I asked how they had been aligning it the last few years if they never set the camber. This was why it was eating tires.

ALWAYS ask for a printout and tell them you will NOT pay for the alignment if you do not get a before and after printout. All new alignment machines should have this capability.
