This is my first post. I've recently bought a brand new 2011 Corolla XRS 5 speed manual, this is my first toyota. It's been a long time since i've purchased a new car as before i owned a honda civic which i could not kill but the body was falling apart so i figured to purchase a new car.
I have a concern with the XRS, i find that it does not idle that smooth....seems like its misfiring at only idle, and with no load. If the air conditioning is on then all seems fine. Otherwise the car drives great, smooth accel, smooth shifting. I've got about 900 km on it so far. I don't know if i should bring it to the dealer or wait for the break in period to end or atleast untill the first oil change.
Is this normal? Will the idle smooth out? Guide me folks.
Wait until 1,000 km which will finish your break in period. Go in for your first oil change and ask them about it. Also, you can test drive the same car on their lot to see if it's the same.
2009 Corolla S AT:
Nokya 2500k fogs/highs/DRLs | DDM 35w 5000K HID kit (lows) | LED Dome/Map/Plate Lights | LED Red 15' Tubes on FR/RR Footwells | Trunk LED Mod | 7' Chinese NAV Headunit | Magnaflow #11264 Muffler w/ #35158 Tip | Pivot 3-Throttle Drive | Takeda SRI | TRD FSB & Springs
I got lucky finding my XRS, but I was going to be happy with the S, they look nearly identical and have a great little engine especially with some mods. Plus better fuel mileage! It does suck Toyota axed the XRS here, they could have made it even more competitive with the GTI, Mazdaspeed3, WRX, etc.
To the OP, the rough idle could be due to the engine breaking in but I would definitely report it to your dealership, maybe even before your first oil change. I bought my XRS used so I didn't have it brand new, I have noticed the car likes to inch forward when you are stopped at a light, never any rough idle though.
Just wait for the turbo kit. You will have even more power than the XRS for about the same money.

I too at first was rather shocked at the non-smooth idle on my 2011 LE. I asked the sales rep and he said it was normal. I wouldn't call it rough or harsh...but it was not exactly smooth idle, either. It has gotten better, and now that it has 2k miles on it, it's a lot better and I barely notice it. Still not as smooth an idle as some other cars I've had, but much better overall than before.

I've never even heard or realized my car was running at idle, even from day one. It's always been so quite & smooth. I've heard that the 1.8L is smoother than the 2.4L too.
