If any of you have ordered shifter bushings that mount on the end of the cable, they probably were a little loose. I got together with a guy on ebay and we took some measurements from my car. He made me a set to those dimensions and they are awesome. Took ALL the play from the bushings out of the shifter. A friend of mine bought a set from TMW. They had about .010" of free play. You could easily feel it in the shifter. He paid about $25 if I recall?
If you want these, go to this ebay add (it may show sold) and drop the guy an email.

Tell him you want them made to these specification:
.867" OD
.3125" ID
They will fit great, all play will be gone, and your cost will be like $9 plus shipping.

To make your shifter work, there are 2 cables that run from under the shifter to the top of the transmission. One cable operates the left/right action of the shifter, the other operates the top/bottom action of the shifter. On the end of the cables in the engine compartment are 2 plastic loops. Inside those loops on a factory car are 2 bushings (one on each cable). Those bushings are made of rubber with a brass insert. The brass insert has a hole that slides over the linkage to make your car shift.
By replacing the 2 rubber bushings with brass bushings, it will firm up the shifter feel immensely. You will now actually feel the click going in and out of the gears. With the rubber, it is just mushy feeling and the shifter is sloppy.
Hope I explained it thoroughly. Best $9 I spent so far...LOL

Is your Corolla a 1.8L? I'm not sure if they are different for an XRS and a S/CE that had the 5-speed. Sounds like a great deal to me.

Yes, it is a 1.8 liter. They show a different part number for the cable, but I believe the bushings are the same.
Now, if you have a hack saw (sawzall) and a welder, you can make a short throw shifter set-up that will really shorten the throws!!
I think that I'll order some for me!
