Well, I traded in my 2009 Corolla S on a 2012 VW Jetta TDI Premium with nav. (6 speed manual)
Drove it off the lot Tuesday night, just got done with a 700-mile road trip. I got 43MPG (with AC on), driving 70MPH (haven't filled it back up to check mileage when I drove at 75-80). This is versus the 32MPG-ish I would typically get, almost no matter what, with the Corolla. (I understand, the Toyota has a gas engine ) My MPG figures are always hand-calculated.
I'll miss the fact that the Toyota was half paid off. But, I've always wanted a diesel.
40,000 miles in essentially 2 years of driving the Toyota, it was a good car.
I've just heard a lot of issues with VW cars from people that own them. I hope that you got a good one. I love the idea of a TDI too but I get 35-36 mpg with my S so the cost difference with the diesel fuel wouldn't be worth it IMO. Taking all the loss on depreciation so quick would also hurt the bottom line. For even better MPG I can drive my Prius & get 50-55 mpg & it still use unleaded for less $$$. Enjoy the TDI though, I wish that there were more TDI choices in the US like there is in Europe.

Ditto it all. I did the math at the time I bought my S and calculated that I could buy the Corolla and the first 100k miles of gasoline for it for the price of just buying the Jetta TDI. With the price of diesel running higher than gasoline, you'd have to drive an insane number of miles to make up the cost on the fuel efficiency of the TDI.
I've seen it written too that the TDI is as much hobby as it is transportation and I really didn't need any hassles at just this point in my life.
The final nail in the coffin was that the nearest VW dealer is about an hour away.
I like my my Corolla, but I have Jetta envy.

They gave me $10,000. The Corolla had a dent that has been quoted as $1,000 to fix. (Thanks, guy who slammed their car door into my car!) It also had a few rock chips in the paint, and a few small dings. Nothing too bad. 40,000 miles. Should have, probably could have, gotten a higher trade in, but at least I got more than I owed. Oh well.
Yea, I know the cost of the TDI plus diesel fuel will take pretty much forever to make up the difference.
However, the increase in fuel mileage, even with the increased cost of fuel, does balance out, and in fact, will reduce my fuel cost.
If you like it and felt that you made the right choice for yourself and your situation, then the more power to you. No need to justify your purchase to others.

good move. TDI was my 1st choice for a beater for doing lots of miles. however, didnt get one because the prices were just too high for what i wanted to spend. in late 2009, it would have taken about 7yrs for me to break even (cost of diesel vs the diff between sales price of TDI & CorollaXRS).
my 2010 XRS has been noting but a pita. rebuilt engine twice, and now something wrong with the rr window, makes some odd bang noise as it rolls down (i just heard the noise for 1st time, was my 1st time rolling the window all the way down). with 37.5k miles on the car i wonder if it will go 50k before needed another engine.

Sounds like you are having an especially bad ordeal with yours. You it's been rebuilt (versus, replaced in whole). Make me wonder if there is an issue with parts that haven't been replaced, but, that's another thread.
I know I had my reservations trading in the Corolla, 40K trouble-free miles (did have the transmission replaced, but it was because of a known-issue shifting into 3rd gear), hoping that this VW gives the same trouble-free service I know I'd have gotten from the Corolla over the long-haul.

the 2nd time my engine went it spit out all of the balance shaft bearings clogging oil pickup screen and filter. Toyota opted twice to rebuild instead of replace the whole thing. very stupid on their part. the motor was not flushed during the work they did the 2nd time so i suspect there's a ton of shiat in the oil galleries. will be no surprise to me when this motors dies yet again.
enjoy your TDI. i may look at it again in a yr or so.

But many of your issues were related to work being done wrong than the quality of the Corolla itself. That could happen to anyone with any car that had poor quality work preformed.
