Anyone achieved 40mpg [5.88 L/100km] or more in their 10th gen corolla?
Hi people of TN
Has anyone achieved 40mpg [5.88 L/100km] or more in their 10th gen corolla?
I have a 2011 Corolla with roughly 17,900 km on it currently
Family and I did a trip recently of 800km [500 miles]each way and was only achieving an average of 6.9L/100km or 34 MPG [I think the corolla is rated at 39 mpg+] ...... This was 90% Hwy and 10% City. When arriving at our destination we parked the car and rode with my brother's van to be all together when going out. On hwy I set the cruise control at 100km/h [62 mph] and stayed on the right lane the whole entire trip there and back. I also tried coasting behind an 18 Wheeler as much as possible too.
In the car was total 4 people and a very minimum about of luggage and clothing as we only went for 5 days total.
I've hit 40 mpg a couple of times. The Corolla is rated at 26 city/35 hwy/30 combined so 34 is not bad with a car full of people. On trips I have had anywhere from 32-41 mpg depending on speed, conditions, load, etc.

I've done 6.2L/100km from Ottawa to Barrie with wife/infant son and the car packed full, which is pretty good, imo. I'd say what you did was pretty good. Did you use heat/ac during the trip?
I've hit 39+ a few times and some of those were 40+. I got over 43 once, but the tank before and after were both 36, so that fill-up and the two on either side may have been fishy. Over 68k miles or so, I'm averaging 36, which appears to be pretty good. I do a lot of rural highway driving with 1 or 2 kid passengers and a lot of miles are driver only.
The EPA rating doesn't give it any credit, but I still think having a manual transmission helps a little. Driving around 58-62 MPH seems to be a sweet spot on level or rolling terrain.

I just got 38 this week....and I have gotten over 40 a few times.
That isn't computed with the dashboard computer... it's actual... the car computer is a bit optimistic.
Here is the rub...I have to drive the freeway with the cruise set at an indicated 60 mph (58 actual)
Accelerate very gradually, letting up on the gas so that the transmission shifts at about 2200 rpm.
No A/C use.
BTW I have 193,000 on my 2009 Capri Sea Green Beauty

Thanks for you input,

Hmmm, lets see....
This year I achieved better than 5.88L/100km (or 40mpgUS) 26 times over the period of 36 fill-ups from April 7 to Oct 9.
My highest this summer was 5.18L/100km (or 45.38mpg US) ... the majority of my tanks were in the 5.5-5.3L/100km (or 42-43mpgUS) bracket ... but still the fuel economy gets better and better with age...
(all manually calculated)
ernest t bass: 193,000 miles (over 310,000kms) on a 2009 ... he gets nothing but from me...

So I know that you use a grill blocker for better aerodynamics but what other goodies do you do? Would you share any secrets? You have always seemed to get 3-4 MPG better than the rest of us. I know that I'm giving up a little with wider tires but I'm happy with what I average. My lifetime computed averaged is 36.2 MPG with a rolling 10 tank average of 35.8 MPG as of now on Fuelly.com.

I've traveled from Santa Barbara to San Diego with an average of 45mpg at 60mph with 2 others in the car, a few bags and other misc. cargo in the trunk.

Really, not anything more other than a few hyper-miling tips, driving with load, light anticipation, rolling engine warm up (aka start up and gently go), highway speed 90km/hr (55mph) the majority of the time. Ridge riding in the rain. I try to conserve as much momentum as possible...especially around corners. I have had my mirrors folded in for over 2 years, tires at 36psi. Original air filter (with 125K km or 78K miles on it) with "CAI My Way". Top grill block all year round/& lower grill block in the winter. No extra gear on board. Pennzoil Platinum engine oil, WS-ATF drain/fill yearly....

I do several of those things too. I drive between 55-70 mph most of the time though, don't fold in my mirrors, don't use grill blocking & have 225 width tires so I can see that between those things I would be 3-4 mpg behind you.

Holy cow! How much driving do you do for 193,000 miles. Anything break on it, or is everything original? I only have like 28k miles on mine. I only use it for going to and from work. Anyway, I've done 200 mile trips on the highway at 55mph and have gotten 47-48mpg when doing the calculation. I think the mph odometer overestimes the speed by about 1-2mph. My odometer would say 49 and change. I also put the pressure in the goodyear tires at 43 psi. I think this is the trick for getting the optimum mileage. It was just me in the car visiting someone for the weekend.
