Replace Tires To Lesson Road Noise?

In all the reviews I have read for the economic class cars, I read where the cabin noise is the most quiet in the Corolla. However, I kind feel like the road noise is loud when going over 40 in my Corolla S with 17 inch alloy wheels. I noticed the tires on there are Goodyear. If I replaced the tires with Yokohama Avid Touring Series, would the road noise be significantly more quiet?

I just replace mine to Yokohama YK 580 and it's a big improvement to handling, control, ride, quiet, rain and lately snow.
Got mine from Discount tires and price is great too.

If I replaced mine at Discount Tires what would I do for the hydrogen? Could I take it back to the dealership and they would switch out the air for hydrogen?

you mean nitrogen? I'd bet that Discount Tire (and nearly any other tire shop) has nitrogen available to fill the tires with. They may charge for it but pretty much every shop should be able to do it.

And yeah, various tires would be quieter than the Goodyears. I'd advise checking out Tirerack.com since they have tons of reviews and tests for all the tires they carry (which is pretty much every tire you'd want to buy). You don't necessarily have to order from them but I did for my winter tires. It was cheaper, easier, and got exactly what I wanted even with shipping, mount and balance. They have a long list of recommended installers (with mount and balance cost information, as well as hours and addresses!) like Sears, Discount Tire, and other well-known shops for your local area. Essentially, you buy tires from Tirerack.com, they ship them directly to the shop, you take you car in and get them installed. It's easy, cheaper (almost always), and quick. My $0.02 on where to get tires. Brick-and-mortar shops like Discount Tire would be a good resource for in-person advise if you don't want to deal with researching yourself or don't like buying things online.

Continental Pro Contact has best noise rating other than

the expensive Michelin (8.6)

Conti has 8.5 noise rating.

That is what I have read too so I picked up a set of Defenders while they were on sale. I will mount them up and get them going in the next few weeks as it doesn't look like we are going to have much of a winter this year either.

Anything is better than the OEM Goodyears. I'm on Yoko Avid Envigors, but they're a bit on the noisy side. If I had the chance again, I might have gone with the YK580s (would've had to buy at Discount/America's Tire), but in the XRS size (17), I would go with a different brand since the warranty is shorter for Z rated tires. Continentals seem to have a good rating and warranty, as does Michelin.

I've spoken to many people that bought the Yokohama YK580 & love them but they are only available from ATC/Discount Tire.

The Yokohama Avid Ascend got better rating than the Michigan Defenders by consumer reports for least noise and best ride comfort. Would the YK580s be better than the Avid Ascends for these two categories?

Do I want to go with the the original OEM size/width tire(17 alloy wheels)or do I want to go wider? On the highway I find the steering to be overly tight from the(lack of) power assisted steering, which I almost can not stand. I'm not sure what size tire to get that would not make it worse.

Yeah, they are good tires...I see them on a lot of vehicles now. I somewhat regret getting Envigors, though I got them way cheaper than what ATC/DTC would've charged me. I do like the 580s, but I realize that for the 215/45/17 size, they only come in Z rated, so the warranty is 45K. This is also the case for my Envigors. For the regular Corolla in 15 or 16 inch, which is either H or V rated, the warranty is 60K. For that reason, the YK580 is a more attractive buy, though Yokohama has many tires to choose from. The Avid Touring S is the cheapest with a good warranty and treadwear rating, but probably the worst if considering performance; however, I see a lot of Camry owners with them (My sister's 04 LE among them).

Any time I found a cheaper price on any tire ATC/DT has always beaten it for me. I even had a case where I found a cheap POS tire on sale at Firestone & ATC beat the price on a much better tire! Those guys are awesome & will do most anything to keep your business. Normally I put performance as the #1 thing on tires since they are the only thing touching the ground & make a huge difference in handling & braking, even if it means a lower tread life. I kind of enjoy buying wheels and tires anyway!

What about the Michelin Primacy MXV4 Tires? Their pretty pricey but tire rack review on them placed them first in choice for comfort and noise.

Would I be able to sell the OEM tires on my 2013 Corolla S with a 100 miles on them for a good price? Or would no one want them?

You can try to trade in your OEM tires with such a little mileage and buy the new tires from them.

These are EXCELLENT tires!!! I highly recommend them especially in the snow. Get them at Costco.
