2010 Corolla S towing capacity?

Looking to tow my motorcycle (360lbs wet) and a small 4x6 trailer (500lbs max) will the corolla do it. I understand the motor will be under a heavier load so mpg is expected to decrease. It will be mostly highway towing as well. I would rather take the corolla than my grand cherokee that gets 15mpg

Your corolla will probably get only marginally better if any fuel economy towing with a Corolla but you will experience some severe control and braking problems.

I would take the jeep or rent a truck.

I would think that it would tow it just fine. I've seen other 10th gens towing small trailers many times over the years.

I also don't think you would have any trouble. My brother has an 87 Mazda 626 and we have been using it to tow a small 4x8 wood floored utility trailer loaded with probably 3-500lbs of stuff with absolutely no trouble at all. I am sure your Corolla has enough umph and brakes to handle it with some cautious driving. I would also think if you didn't try to cruise at 75-80 that the mpg would easily beat the 15mpg of the Jeep, I would guess high 20's.

You will have no problem, I think the total tow capacity is around 1000lbs. Ive towed I 4x8 trailer with two wood stove with a total weight around 900 lbs with no problem. Mind you it was slow going uphill and hard on gas (13L/100km).

I thought you said more weight.

Still the fuel economy of a Corolla drops significantly by simply adding people.

I would wager you are only marginally better with the Corolla.

Take your Jeep. It's a car, not a tow vehicle.

I think the towing capacity is 1500lbs, which is quite high for a compact car. You shouldn't have any major problems, otherwise Toyota wouldn't say the car was safe to tow with.

Just came upon this thread as I had to give up my 07 4Runner for an 09 Corolla S due to a significant increase in my daily commute (new job). I have an 06 Honda Aquatrax F-12X (3 seater). Dry weight is 792, trailer is about 200, a full tank of fuel is about 140, and misc. cargo in the ski only 20-30 lbs. That's an approximate total of 1160 lbs. The car is rated for 1500 as discussed; just not sure about handling or stopping ability.

I just came back from Lowes with 10 concrete blocks in the trunk and you could tell I had the extra payload. Just wondering if it would tear up the transmission. Car has 45k on it, and I'll do a drain/fill at 50k even though it has the WS fluid. 60k is recommended if you tow. Currently I put a hitch on my toy car (89 Taurus SHO) which has a 220hp V6 and easily pulls it. What's funny is that the SHO model is rated at 1000 lbs and the Corolla is rated at 1500. Keep in mind the SHO has the same suspension setup as a standard Taurus; so there's nothing special about it other than the engine/tranny combo. It is a 5spd as well.

Yeah I can go buy a $3000 truck but we have 4 vehicles and I take the ski out half a dozen times a year maybe. How does the Corolla do pulling the boat out of the water on the ramp?

I'm told you drive in D3. Do you use low gear to pull it out of the ramp? Any input is appreciated.

I can't remember how many miles this guy had on his older, smaller Corolla but he's been using it for many years hauling this trailer with old appliances in it. No issues he said with anything, brakes, engine or trans.

Those engines are known to be torque monsters aren't they? I doubt the modern version is as torquey.

I found that an 09 can tow up to 1500 pounds so you should be fine. I'd take it on some lower speed roads first to see if it'll do okay. Then try it on the highway. Had a buddy that had an old two door lowered civic and towed a boat with it all the time and even towed a huge hot tub back from Tallahassee
