Quietest Automatic Matrix?

It seems that with the 2.4, you shouldn't have to rev as much as the 1.8 because of more torque and the 5th gear for the highway so you should hear less engine noise.
However, with the 2.4, you get noisy low profile tires that could bring annoyingly loud road noise on a coarse concrete freeway at 70 MPH.
I would want the quietest, most comfortable daily driver for a 1 hour each way commute, plus occasional long distance weekend trips.
Which will be the quietest riding around town and at highway speeds?
Is the 2009 Matrix much nosier than a Corolla XLE?
I would be more inclined to get the Corolla XLE because I know it's quiet based on all the reviews, but the extra cargo room of a Matrix could come in handy.

You can get the 2.4 on the S as well as the XRS. Does the S share the same tires as the XRS?

Since both sizes are 55's I would assume the same tire noise. S is available with 17's in a 45 profile too.

The Corolla has the acoustic windshield for a quieter ride. It also has normal 16" tyres (not the sportier lower profiles ones on the XRS models).

The Corolla's trunk is pretty spacious, take a look. Granted, the Matrix is definitely the one to go for for outright space but the Corolla can hold its own assuming you're not transporting cupboards and the like.

So, they don't put the the acoustic glass in the Matrix too?
Is there a chart anywhere that shows what rpms are running at various speeds on the Corolla and Matrix?

No. The Corolla is the one with "class up" features. The Matrix has a few tricks up its sleeve but it's more like retractable purse hooks and a digital transmission position indicator (automatic) in the instrumental panel. The biggest draw to the Matrix is that you get the 2.4 litre without having to move to the XRS (like you do for the Corolla) plus you get AWD as a option. Both base/S (or XR in Canada) use the same 16" spec wheel/rim combo as the LE/XLE/S Corolla (205/55R16 I think) so in terms of tyres, they're the same... just whether you get steelies w/ covers or alloys

USA I noticed the road noise as well

I had the same problem with my Matrix S model. I felt that the highway road noise was very loud. After doing some research I applied sound deadening material to all of the doors and the hatchback. The difference was UNBELIEVABLE. The car is as quiet as a Lexus LS430. It completely reduced the noise. I have enough material to do the floorboard and the ceiling, but that will have to wait to another weekend. I posted a thread detailing how I did it. I would highly recommend this upgrade. It is like driving a completely different car.

How to Sound Proof Doors

I was the best $ 240 I ever spent!!
