Page 355 of my 2009 AWD version's owner's manual (Canadian) says that the low fuel level warning light will come on when the fuel remaining is 2 US gallons, or 1.6 Imperial gallons, or 7.5 liters. Please refer to the manual for the exact wordings. There should be enough fuel left for you to get to the next gas station in a city environment when the warning light comes on. On a highway, especially in remote places, please watch out for warnings like "No gas station in X number of km/miles ahead" or the like as you go. It is good to plan ahead and to stay on the conservative side.

if you are driving hard, you should be able to go another 30 miles (48 km) until you need to worry. if you are driving nicely, you can probably go for another 50 miles (80 km) until you should start worrying.

i do suggest filling up the gas a little sooner than that though because what happens is you suck up sediment from the bottom of the tank which plugs up the fuel filter faster. this in turn will hinder and can build up to block fuel flow which will stop the car entirely. fuel filters are changed when you get the car tuned up by any professional shop.

I was just curious, I had a Volkswagen before this and the manual said 80Km @80Km/hour on reserve, so I guess the Matrix is about the same, just something I would like to know just in case, very rarely do i go empty but when the light does come on I do get it filled out quick.

thanks for all the replies

has the mileage gone up since then? How has it been after your accident? Manual or auto? How do you drive it? Would think 45 minutes twice a day on the highway would yield better than 26MPG, unless of course you have the needle pegged.

on my 08 corolla le a 40 minute each way trip to work and back with the cruise set at 65mph i was getting in the high 30's mpg.

My millage has gone up a bit, I drive 130 Km round trip to work, 14 Km is city streets all other driving is highway, as long as I keep @ 100Km/h I get 525 Km on a tank of gas, I have the XR 5 Speed manual 2.4 engine, if I drive over 12Km/h a few times I might get 450 Km on a tank. right now in 4 months I have just over 12K on the car.

I get around 500KM to a tank when the low fuel light comes on. Then when I fill it only take about 41 or 42 litres of gas, so I still had abit to go. I have a 2.4 5spd and I drive it kinda hard, and it is about %85 city driving. Has anyone here tried mid grade or premium gas and got better milage?
