2009 Matrix S 2.4L OIL FILTER!?

Went to change the oil this weekend and the search device at the store did not have an 09 matrix in it. I asked a guy at the shop and he said PH4967 fram oil filter to use on it. So that is what I went with. This filter is considerable shorter than the Toyota Denso filter that I took off. Is this filter correct or do I need to replace it with a different one? Please advise.
Thanks!

I did some more digging and found another post where it looks like Fram recently changed the filter from PH4397 to the PH4386. The 4386 is a bit longer than the 4397 but they said it won't cause any harm to the motor. I'll go with the 4386 the next time I change oil again.
THANKS!

Just my 2 cents but I would have stuck with the OEM oil filter, but I understand that price and availablility come into play, in fact I used a fram on my wifes crv when I did the oil change a few months back. I'm sure you'll be fine with fram....

This is my first experience with a cannister filter. The filter (element really) box says you need an SST tool. Is that true? I tried to get my oil changed to synthetic today and my mechanic could not find a filter -- so I went and bought one at Toyota ($5 and some change).

The 2.4 has a spin-on filter different to the 1.8. I replied to your post over on MO with a link to a how-to in the 10th gen corolla forum here on TN which should help.

It's just a 65mm 14 flute oil filter tool needed can get one for about $10 at most auto stores.

Up until recently Toyota I4s for cars (I dunno about trucks) only had two filters. The only difference is that one of them is about 3/4" longer than the other. The thread and gasket are the same size. Now there are cartridge type filters that I'm not familiar with.

In order to save money, some companies only make the smaller filter because it will fit both applications since the longer filter might not have clearance where the shorter filter is called for.

The new 2.4L is the same filter as the Camry, RAV4, Highlander 4-cylinder, as well as the 2ZZ in the Celica, Matrix, Corolla XRS, and the older MR2 turbo (3S-GTE) and 4A-GE/GZE.

It's a very common filter, Toyota part number 90915-10004 or 90915-YZZF1.
