2009 Matrix (1.8L, Base Trim) OIL CHANGE

Hi Matrix fans,

I bought a new 2009 Toyota Matrix (1.8L, Base Trim) Automatic. I love the car. It is due for a oil change now. Two quick questions:

1> Does the oil change has to be done at recommended 5K mile mark ?
2>What kind of oil is recommended ? 5W20 ordinary oil OR 5W20 synthetic oil ?

-Dutch

Hi,

1: Yes 5k although I change out first oil at 3k Below link shows schedules maintenance

http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/index.php

2: Either dino or syn is fine it's your choice 5w20, or recommended in the owners manual is 0w20 (which is only available in syn)

Enjoy the trix - I'm still enjoying my 1.8l especialy when in 3k rpm range

Changing Oil Filter

Hey I just did my first oil change. Didn't change the filter. Should I have? Did the standard 5W-20 oil, got the oil filament from the dealer, but tried to change the filament and couldn't. Does anyone know a specific tool for the filter? Where can I get it?

Always change the oil filter when you drain the oil out and put new oil in. But, as far as how to change the filter, beat me, I haven't done it yet.

65mm 14 flute oil filter cap removal tool, they fit into a 3/8 drive ratchet, you can find them at most autoparts stores for about $8.

If you search the 09 corolla forum there is a thread with pictures that 'wonger' posted a while back.

Edit: here's the thread:

1st rolla oil change + pictures

Canada Going for 1st oil change today

I purchased a 2009 XR with Sport package AWD Matrix and really enjoy driving it. ( 2.5L)
It's going for the 1st oil change today and the service dept. told me to wait for the 2nd or 3rd oil change before switching over to Synthetic Oil. So I figured I would share this information with your guys.
Any thoughts?

My thoughts ae the dealerships ae full of BS. Why wait? better lubrication. I switched my first oil change (now have 20,000KM and I change every 5000KM) and its running smoooooth. I would of drained out the dyno oul the day I got it and switched to synthetic if I could afford it. Most of the times the dealerships dont know what they are talking about, you good to switch to synthetic whenever you feel like it. I use 5W20 Royal Purple.
