I am looking at using synthetic oil for my next oil change, and I spoke with a salesman at a toyota dealership who said it isn't advised. I drive an 09 1.8L automatic. She didn't make any sense when she tried to tell my why it was a bad idea. Any suggestions? I'm sure there's someone out there driving with synthetic oil.
I use synthetic oil, and I have not had any issues so far.
My car has 1.8l engine and auto trans.
I switched to synthetic oil at 5000 miles.
Good luck!

What weight and brand are you using? I guess mobil 1 doesn't have the recommended 5W-20. Thanks for you input!
It is proven that synthetic is better then dyno oil. Dont know why they told you otherwise. Synthetic sticks to the parts better meaning better lubrication.
Ive use synthetic in my old car for a few years and no problem, and ive been using it in the Matrix since the first oil change, and ive done 3 so far and nothing except a smoother idle. I use 5W20 Royal Purple, stuff is amazing been using it for years.

Thanks for your response, Josh. Same question to you... when do you change out your synthetic oil? Thanks.
I change my synthetic oil every 5000-6000KM or 3125-3750 miles, or every 3 months. I also use Toyota oil filters. It is kind of an over kill, but I like my engine to be well lubricated with fresh oil. The oil usually comes out looking pritty good. My friends always joke and ask for my old oil to use in their cars haha.
0W20 is hard to find, and royal purple does not make 0W20 oil. My cap says 0W20 or 5W20 oil, and I am pritty loyal to Royal Purple so 5W20 it is for me. Hope this helps,
service advisor is talking out of the posterior. They don't care, and do whatever to save a few $ here and there but will be ignorant as a lobotomized chimpanzee when it comes to what is plainly ovbious, times have moved on. they just don't want to deal with arranging non bulk oil or some crap. In an ideal world she whould have said 'sure go ahead' oh and by the way your oil cap has 0 or 5w20 which may only come in synthetic, and asked do you want them to use their synthetic or would you like to bring in 5 quarts of your own finest brew!
moving on...
I did my initial change at my dealer at 3k (yes they used bulk 5w30 doh!)
then at 5k I did my own oil change and used synthetic Penzoil 5w20 I was planning on doing 5k OCI
edit: I also also use genuine toyota oil filter cartridge

there is this super oil out there called eneos it is not a blend like royal purple or mobil or any other for that matter it has been proven that this is the most superb oil out on the market
it is a high end oil we have guys that have ran it for 15000 miles and still looks clean, had an older gentleman come in the shop looking for it and he had bought and came back to let us know that he had gained 2-3 miles per gallon

Yeah, I thought she was a nut, but wanted to be sure. Where do you purchase toyota oil filter catridges? If I had my oil changed at walmart for example, would I need to use one in order for the warranty to be valid? Also, why still change at 5K miles when you should be able to run synthetic longer? Is there a warranty issue here?

You can use whatever catridges you want, just keep your oil change recipts for warrenty reasons. People change it at 5K to still be on the safe side. Some oil's say you dont need to change for a year, but the way I see it oil is oil and needs to be changed.
You can buy the oil filters from a dealer or order them online from a dealer (trdsparks.com is good). Basically that 5k is just like sundance says, I bet it could go longer but I am doing it myself and keeping all the receipts.
Walmart might be able to order the fram oem replacement, if you look on fram website I have seen that they have an oil filter cartridge kit for the 1.8.
make sure you have the right filter and the brand you are using is something known to be trusted, you can change your own oil but if you use Bob's filters and it kills the car then Toyota won't warranty anything because you decided that Bob's filter can save you 1/2 a penny and it should work the same as Mobil, Fram, K&N, Toyota, etc... Toyota can easily turn around and tell you that since you changed your own oil they wouldn't know if you used the proper weight and/or proper filter so be careful, sometimes saving receipts isn't everything. Just don't be cheap!
