Thanks for the reply. That, along with other factors (i.e. parking brake, using the heater while the a/c was on) have been taken into consideration. It's not a user issue as my wife has the same problem when she drives it.
I own a 2009 Matrix AWD - XR with the sport package. I've been tracking my fuel consumption and kilometers at every fill up since the begining of March of this year. I use my iPOD Touch with an application called Road Trip Lite, (free) and it charts my fuel as well as cost per liter. I had no idea what to expect since up here in Winnipeg winter is a definite factor when it comes to fuel consumption. What I found is that I was averaging around 28.5 mpg (it converts over to standard units for me) during the sub-zero temperatures. Now that spring/summer is finally arriving the mpg should get better. Of course 28.5 mpg with a lot of city driving is pretty darn great, especially since I have an All Wheel Drive with the 2.4L engine. I've put on my summer wheels/tires (18" wheels with low profile tires) and I expect better mpg's. I can't wait to take a highway trip out west, not only for the ride but for seeing what the mpg's will be. I'll let you guys know. I'm in the process of looking into changing out the exhaust to a more high performance exhaust. I did that with my '03 Matrix AWD-XR and also put on an AE Cold Air Intake and the performance was greatly improved.
By the way if you guys/gals know of anyone wanting to buy the AE Cold Air Intake - it's for sale 'cause it won't fit my '09. I may add an AE Cold Air Intake to my '09 plus do the exhaust. My car is only 4 months old so there's lots of time to make that decision.
Jiber172r - thanks for your reply. I've had the car since October 2008 and still get less than 400Km on a tank.
If I consider the posted fuel consumption rates (9.6L/100Km city and 7.1L/100Km Hwy) - I should average about 520km on a tank in the city - likley closert to 500Km but might get about 350km. Highway driving isn't much better but should get near 700km on a tank.... and no, I'm not driving in 3rd, or with the parking brake on, etc.

520km city/700km highway on a 2.4L Matrix!? Woah...that's WAAAYYY too optimistic, and downright impossible I'd even say. The most I've ever gotten up till I had the low fuel light come on during all highway driving was close to 500km, and that was driving at 105km/h, all highway.
For all city driving, expect to get ~400km till you get the fuel light on. If you're getting less than 400km, than you're prob doing all city agressive driving.

Hey there.
First off, as you probably know, those posted fuel econimies on the window are absolutely redonkulous. Even though I'm Canadian, I'm not sure what we do to measure economy, but I know the EPA runs the vehicles up to something like 45 or 50 mph for the highway test for only twenty minutes, and they measure the exhaust pipe emission and carbon levels. The tests have since been changed, but still you can see where the indescrempencies are, as engines burn very cleanly now so the emissions levels are a lot lower then they were from even as recently as 4 or 5 years ago. This is one of the reasons why a 5500 lb pick-up truck can advertise it gets 30 mpg on the highway.
As for fuel economy, I drive a Matrix XR with the 2.4 and 5 Speed Auto, (15,000 kms on the odo) and just recently I've noticed my mileage has been going up, even when compared to as little as a month ago, and I've been quite happy with it
My last trip, to the cabin in Ontario, I averaged 41 mpg. On the way home, I used half a tank but was going into a head wind the whole way, resulting in a 37 mpg FE, a resulting average of 39 mpg.
In the city, I've noticed pretty good mileage, usually between 27 and 34 mpg.
I'm not the guy who smokes his tires at every red light, but I'm not someone out for a casual cruise either, somewhere in between ya know.
I honestly think that those numbers are great and will only get better as the engine losens up over time.

FYI, I switched over to Eneos 0W20 full synthetic oil about a month ago when I had the first oil change for my car done, and I've noticed my fuel economy has gotten better about 5-7% overall. Not only that, my engine is now better protected with synthetic oil. If you haven't done it yet, go synthetic!
Hey, according to the guys on bob is the oil guy forums. Eneos 0w20 is actually the Factory Fill in these new cars.
I doubt it. It sounds a bit different at start up after the oii change, right when the engine turns on. I even asked Toyota because I had heard that as well, but even Toyota says they do not fill it with synthetic from the factory. Don't you think Toyota would state it in the manual, warning to stick to synthetic for subsequent oil changes?
I don't doubt it from the sources I heard it from, and no Toyota would not need to recommend synthetic but, they do recommend 0w20 which is pretty much only synthetic, so in a way they already recommend sythetic right from the get go.
So now why would you doubt that they use what they recommend from the factory fill. IMHO and from what I have researched about it, I think some kind of Eneos 0w20 is the factory fill. So maybe they use some kind of semi syn version or a 5w20? What oil did Toyota tell you they use?
All engines will sound sweet on a fresh oil change.
Anyway, it's not really a big deal. 0w20 Eneos is great oil, it's just a shame that my 1.8l consumes the 0w20 I have switched to 5w30

Call up Toyota's service department at any dealer. Ask them if they have 0W20 in non-synthetic...the answer is YES. THeir synthetic 0W20 if you request a synthetic oil change is Mobil1.
Out of all the Mobil 1 synthetic oil weights 5w30 has the best protection rating (passed the most tests and obtained the most certifications). I cant say for the other brands because I only use whats readily available.
I also have a 1.8L (09 Corolla), running 5w30 M1 full synthetic. IMO engine longevity + smoothness > 2% mileage loss. The newer engines from toyota can run 0w20 because of better/tighter engineering tolerances in manufacturing, but these newer engines coupled with more protective oil is the better way to go IMO.
