Harsh Downshifting When Coming to a Stop

This past Sat, I took my 09 XRS in for the 30K servicing, as always I ask if there is any TSB\Recall notices since my last, I have been having issues with the downshifting I was told there is a TSB for this.

T-SB-0082-09 March 11, 2009

2009 Corolla\Matrix Drivetrains 2 WD, Engine(s) 2AZ, Transmission(s) 5AT, VDS(s) BE40E, BE40E, KE40E.

Call your dealer with your VIN # they should tell you if your vehicle is in the TSB program. The above VDS numbers are in your VIN # just find the corresponding section that matches the VDS.

This will be covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty which is in effect for 96 months or 80K miles whichever occurs first.

Now the bad news, after the TSB was done, I can still feel a downshift problem ,but not as harsh as before, I will again call the dealer and check with them, as in a an earlier forum it was said, the computer has to learn your driving habits which I think is hog wash, you should be able to get in and just drive, not worry about a expensive piece of computer.

Hi,

Sorry you don't like the concept of your car "learning" how you drive but that is a 100% true fact. Give it a week or so and see how it does. Today's car are incredible smart being able to adjust a host of operating functions automatically for us, mostly in the interest of reducing harmful gases emitted out of the tail pipe.

The car will certainly let you just hop in and drive just fine. It WILL most often drive better after it figures out what your particular driving style is. If you share the car it will be a combination of the various drivers. More expensive cars that allow you to tell it or it senses automatically who is driving have multiple personalities, it remembers and adjusts not only the seat and pedals but also all of these functions for you.

you know how much it costs to replace a clutch? around $700 dollars.

you know how much it costs to replace brake pads? around $40 dollars.

why people downshift to stop is beyond me. the wear and tear you put on the engine/transmission/clutch is incredible and simply NOT WORTH IT in the long run, only because you want to seem cool slowing down the car with the stick shift rather than the brakes.

I found this in a Vibe's forum and I had my PCM updated for my 09 vibe with 2.4L 5sp auto... and it resolve the problem I had with downshifting.

New bulletin to address that point, do not think it is wise to change trans fluid to non GM spec during warranty period

LoL - I guess you don't realise they're talking about harsh downshifting w/Automatic Transmission.
