Canada DIY Oil Change - any warranty issues?

I am planning on doing my next oil change on my own and I wanna use Mobil 1 synthetic oil. My Toyota dealership told me to keep all the receipts for oil changes as a proof in case of engine issues and so on.
So, if I do my own oil change, I won't have any receipts that would show when I did the oil changes, as I buy my oil in bulk when it goes on sale.

Would it be sufficient to keep those receipts in order not to void my warranty?

And I was reading in another thread on this forum that some ppl use OEM Toyota oil filters with synthetic oil. Does Toyota have synthetic oil filters or are those just regular oil filters that you can use with synthetic oil?
I tried to get FRAM synthetic oil filters for the 2010 Matrix but they don't seem to have them yet, just regular oil filters...

Thanks for your replies!

I would keep the recept when you buy your oil in bulk, and keep all your oil filter recipts. Because you will only have 1 recipt for the oil, just keep a log book of when and how many kilometers you did your oil change. I change my oil and just write the milage and date on the recipts. I use Toyota OEM oil filters with Royal Purple full synthetic and it seems to work great!

Hi,
I am the technical manager for FRAM. Your dealer is just trying to intimidate you into getting maintenance done there. You can read up on the laws regarding this issue on www.fram.com. Go to the tech facts button at the top. Read the pdf on the magnussen moss warranty act. You should definately keep a log book with reciepts for oil and filters you buy. They cant stop you from doing it your self, it will not void your warranty. The XG filter for the 2010 matrix will be released for production in Jan 2010.

Thanks for your replies!

I do my own oil changes as well, I keep a log of the date, mileage and keep receipts. toyota OEM oil filter cartridges are nice and cheap and easy to get for me, so I stick with toyota oem filters (same filter regardless of using dino or synthetic).

Thanks for the link, motorking! I'm glad to know that there is a law that allows you to do your own oil changes without voiding the warranty. Did my first oil change @ 3,000 km at the dealership and it was a sort of a rip off what they charged me for that cheap regular oil. Prefer using synthetic oil of course.
I will be watching out for the FRAM XG oil filters for the '10 Matrix. Thanks!

Toyota Canada only requires that you keep your receipt for the oil and the oil filter. The receipt will be dated so you can tell what time frame you bought the oil and filter. You are not required to use a factory oil filter or factory oil. I will say though that the facotry oil filters are actually fairly cheap.
