Question Cell Phone hands-free/bluetooth probs in 2nd hand 09 Matrix XRS

First, I have to disclose that I am not exactly a geek when it comes to technologies such as blue tooth devices and such. This is the first 'new' car I have ever owned (I'm over 50 yrs. old) and while I do pretty well with regular computers and such, these nifty new cars easily baffle me.

I bought the 09 Matrix through a dealer and it appears to have had only one prior owner. The car does NOT have one of those GPS navigation things or any other display screens beyond what which shows in the "JBL In Dash am/fm/sat 6-DR changer w/WMA, MP3 playback capability". Specs state it is equiped with Bluetooth with 9 speakers in 7 locations and steering wheel audio/hands-free controls"

The system still has/had the settings as per the prior owner. I have not been able to either (a) get the hands-free/phone set up to either 'start fresh' (as if brand new w/o prior owner or programing), or (b) recognize & allow setup of my LG AX355 bluetooth-enabled cell phone.

I have read the manuals for the car, for the phone, and searched fairly extensively via google - but to no avail. The Toyota manual itself absolutely glazes my eyes over and leave my brain running in circles when it comes to trying to follow the instructions for phone linking/pairing, whatever else the buzz terms are. I also searched these forums to a point quite a ways back in time, but didn't find anything that would seem to help my specific situation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any way to 'reset' the car/phone system to fresh, empty, as if new or never before used? Analogously, similar to removing a car's battery for a time in order to fully clear both short and long-term malfunction codes?

This really has been maddening for me.
Thanks.
m

First, check with your dealer if there is something wrong with blue tooth.
second, use the voice control function (press the speak button and follow the instructions) on the steering wheel to control the settings/pair your phone.

Are you sure you have blue tooth installed?

m,

I have the Toyota Blue-Tooth with a separate button on the dash.
With it, you have to depress the button (with the phone symbol) until it beeps (three?) times to get it to search for a cell phone with Blue-Tooth capability.

I then had to set the phone's Blue-Tooth system to link with the car. This was the hardest part and every model phone has a different set-up, so you will need to go over the phone's manual carefully. The phone also has to have "voice recognition" turned on.

With my Samsung phone, I either have to turn the phone on before I start the car, or I have to press several keys on the phone to initiate the link. There again, every phone is somewhat different.

Hope this helps!

Dave

I set up the bluetooth phone pairing with a samsung blackjack (had to update my software to avoid an echo) and my new iphone. If you turn the bluetooth function on with your phone (sometimes this means you tell the phone to turn on bluetooth headset capability or something like that) the car will identify the phone. You may have to hit a button first on the steering wheel. The video in this link is really helpful.

I have the same JBL system you have in my 09 XRS and have paired 2 separate times with 2 different phones with no problems. All I can tell you is to follow the manual.
