Apparently the roof spoiler is for more than just looks. With it, I have never had ice in the hinge area...of course, I normally keep the beast in the garage...but, I would assume that most with the spoiler have not had "hinge icing".

Also, the hinge is at the fulcrum point of a powerful lever (the hatch door). It is highly unlikely that ice on the hinges could ever prevent the door from opening or cause any real damage.

As part of vehicle testing, Toyota basically freezes a test car in a block of ice. I cannot see any design that could not handle a little snow or ice ever making it to the market these days. These are not GM vehicles that rely on the first owners to be Guinea pigs.

You are correct. I wrote before looking at the spoiler location closely. Again, keeping my car garaged has prevented any icing as you have experienced.

I don't experience anything like that on my matrix that doesn't have any spoiler.

On my wifes matrix, she had a gasket that was falling out in the area I think your talking about. The dealer fixed it by ripping it out all together hoping I would not notice. Turns out they need to replace the whole window as the gasket is part of the glass... anyway check yours to make sure they did not yank the gasket out (it runs outside so no water enters the cab & the gasket itself runs along the top and (2) sides of the hatch door)
