Matrix RPM question

hi guys,

I just bought a 2010 matrix and happen to own a 2009 corolla.

from what i understand, both vehicles have exactly the same engine. however, when driving at 80km/hour constant, my corolla goes at 2000 rpms dead on but when driving with the matrix at 80km/hour constant, it is slightly higher than 2000 rpms (about 2050 to 2100 rpms). Is this normal?

at first, i thought it might be a difference in weight but even when i have passengers in my corolla, it is at 2000 rpms.

i know the difference in RPM is not big, but i am afraid that there is a small problem with my engine.

anyone who can shed some light on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can't really expect that the engine speed or efficiency of an engine to be identical from one vehicle to the next, not even if it is the same identical model. Too many factors come into play that could cause the variable difference between the 2 engines. Besides driving habits, why do you think people get considerably different fuel consumption rates on the same vehicle.

It could be anything like the engine wear/break in period, differently configured ECU/ECM, the charging and ignition system in one car might be slightly more efficient than the other, weight, the injectors might be giving more/less fuel than the other, grade of fuel, percentage of ethanol or other additives in fuel, efficiency of the torque converter, wheel size, tire pressure, road conditions, aerodynamics, engine temp, ambient temp, what accessories do you have ON fan, A/C, radio, lights, defrost; oil viscosity (in engine or transmission), air filter, color...ANYTHING!
The specifications toyota gives say that Those 2 cars are rated at 2 completely different fuel consumption rates, the corolla is more efficient by a difference of 2-4 MPG on the 1.8L models. So by definition, the matrix has to work a little harder to travel the same speed.

Tire size has an effect on overall gearing as well - a 50 to 100RPM difference is well within the resolution of your gauges.
