DIY Oil Change

I just changed the oil in my Scion xD for the first time and wanted to share the lessons learned with others who prefer to do there own maintenance. I’ve been changing my own oil and performing most basic maintenance for years but this was my first experience with a Toyota engine. The main difference with Toyota is you must buy the proper oil filter wrench, this wrench cannot be found in any auto parts store. The xD has the same 1.8 liter engine as the Corolla / Matrix so this info applies to all three vehicles. My only beef with Toyota on this topic is they make this information hard to come by; hence the motivation for this post. You will need Toyota’s special service tool 09228-06501 this is a 64mm 14 flute oil filter cap. You can buy this tool from Toyota for $35.00 or you can do what I did and buy the same tool off the Mac Tool truck for $15.00. I was told by a Toyota technician that they buy this tool from either from the Mac Tool or Snap-On tool truck. The tool number is also listed as TOY 640 on ASTtool.com. The smallest oil filter cap wrench you will find in the auto parts stores is 65mm which will not work. The TOY 640 is a high quality tool that fits the plastic oil filter cap perfectly and makes the job easy as pie. The other thing about changing the oil on this vehicle is metal clip. Simply take a ball pen hammer and gently tap the back edge to remove it prior to taking off the plastic oil filter cap. Then reinstall it when your done.

Also, if you have access to Brake Kleen it helps amazingly with oil residue/spills. No mess, no fuss, and it dries up in seconds.
