Cool. Was this hard/expensive to put in?

They're easy to install. A hose from the vent tube on the valve cover -> catch can-> hose to intake tube.
You can find nice ones of all colors on Ebay very cheaply.

While yes, you can get them on line, there is no internal baffling and the hose connectors are extremely small. Not to mention that you cant put anything inside them as well. For the price, all of $12 I built my own. I was able to make it the size I wanted, with internal baffling and a top that I can remove and look inside. Im very happy with the way it turned put, and the location of it.

Not hard at all

Hmm thats neat. Ive heard a lot about these things, but I am still not 100% sure of the functionality of this. What exactly does it do??

They keep oil vapor from reentering the engine. The EPA has regulated that the vapor from the valve cover must be recirculated back into the air intake and vapor from the crank case must flow thru the PCV to the intake manifold.
I use to find a ton of oil at the bottom of my supercharger. Post cans, its dry.

Agreed. The cheap ones are junk. The only two I know of with internal baffling are made by Moroso and Saikou Michi.
Its important that the can has some sort of internal mesh for the vapor to condense on and that the can be mounted lower than its source so any condensation in the line drains to the can and not back to the source.

My cans are about the size of a soda can each. The can on the valve cover gets to about 1/2-3/4ths full at around 5k mi. The can on the PCV is usually dry.

I have a custom built version of the Saikou Michi DC3 dual catch can with all custom positioned brass NPT fittings. http://www.saikoumichi.com/DC3_page.htm

Yours looks good. Nice to see someone making a truly functional diy part.

well here it is. all the dirty old oil that would have coated the inside of the intake manifold, and crudded up the sparkplugs.

how can this be a good thing to run through an engine and try to burn...?

ya. its a good thing to do. but make sure you use thick hose. the hose i had on there actually caved in. so i took it off for the mean time. i really dont know how burning all that oil is good for emissions and mpg...

A catch can is more applicable to a turbocharged vehicle. The oil mist from the crankcase breather generally gums up the compressor side of the turbo and causes it to slow down hence making less boost pressure.

Sure a catch can with demisting material (virgin steel wool) will help a naturally aspirated car over a long period of time also by keeping the intake cleaner.
