Harsh ride

I recently traded my 09 Tacoma for an 09 AWD S. I didn't notice it during the test drive, but after taking a long trip this weekend, the ride quality on this car is horrible IMHO. You feel
every bump & the car nearly bottoms out on potholes.

I am considering a set of Grand Touring tires (I have 16"'wheels) but I don't think that will be enough to smooth out the ride. Any other suggestions? (besides "It's supposed to be that way/drive a Buick")

OEM tires are a compromise in terms of comfort, lifespan, costs, and fuel economy - IMO, not very good at any of them. Swapping to a different tire, like a Bridgestone Turanza or similar touring tire can make a huge difference. More a function of how the manufacturer designed the tire construction than the size.

Especially if you are bottoming out the suspension - might have to upgrade the springs. On my 2002 Corolla - I'd routinely bottom out the suspension with even a hit of a load in the trunk. After swapping to TRD performance springs, which even after lowering the static ride height by an 1.25", only bottomed out a handful of times. All in the spring rate - even a mild increase can have a huge impact in ride quality.

Eventually going to go down this road on my current Matrix XRS - even with the factory upgraded spring rates. For long trips, especially loaded with coolers filled with ice, fishing/camping stuff, etc. - there are times where I run the car into the bumpstops.

Can you suggest which TRD springs to use? I asked the parts guy at the dealer and he said the only Toyota springs that would work were the same ones that came with the car, so he was no help. As I mentioned in the first post, the car is AWD...

I haven't seen the TRD springs for the AWD variant available yet - but there are some aftermarket options out there now. Like H&R Sport Springs - part number 54631 - runs about $180/kit. Mild drop - about 1.3"-1.5" all the way around. Note that this will likely ride stiffer than stock, but the higher spring rates will keep you from bottoming out as often.

Try lowering the tire pressure a couple of PSI. It will reduce the tire slap over rough pavements and also make the tire flex a bit more.

I can give that a shot. One of the first things I tried was to make sure that the tires weren't over-inflated, which they didn't appear to be. I can try knocking a couple of psi off & see if there's a difference.
