TPMS triggering tool Ateq VT15 vs Matrix '11 learning mode

Dear forum users,

I have a '11 1.8 FWD Matrix and found a good deal on used winter tires (lives in Quebec where winter tires are mandatory). Pirelli Winter Carving 8/32" 205/55r16 mounted on rims with TPMS sensors used on 2008 Matrix for 250$.

Since it includes TPMS sensors, I want to activate them to avoid always lit warning light. I've found a Tiggering tool online (http://www.tpms-tool.com/TPMS-tool-ATEQVT15.php). It says it is compatible with Toyota Matrix, but I believe some non american cars need a special OBDII tool to start the learning mode.

Is it the case for the Matrix? Are those 1st generation sensors compatible with 2nd generation Matrix? Anyone tried this TPMS triggering tool? Any warning about those tires too? Are they good in snow and on ice (they are not studded)?

Thanks in advance for the input!

As for the tires, pretty decent grip in most winter conditions except for solid sheet ice. 8/32" tread depth might get you two, maybe three more seasons out of them before they hit 1/2 wear mark. By then, most of the ice capabilities will be lost (worn out sipes) and you're left with basically a good all-season tire.

As for the TPMS sensor, the two generations use the same sensor part number 2607-06011. If the ECM has to go into a test or diagnostic mode first - that I'm unsure of. In the past, when I ran snow tires on a TPMS equipped car - I just ignored the warning lamp, as "I" act as the car's TPMS - by making sure the tires are correctly inflated.

I think i will just buy 4 tires and mount/unmount them every year onto the 17" summer mag rims i have on now ..... my lexus has two full memory positions to switch between the summer/winter set. This should be available on all cars ..... what a rip!
