2009 Matrix XRS owner here with the OEM 18" wheels
Due to the size of the wheel and the added weight - some have reported excessive tire wear. My first set of tires wore out in less than 7K miles, tire wear was totally uneven. Alignment was checked - was still inside of spec.
Ride quality will definitely suffer - you'll feel every crack, bump in the road - due to the reduced sidewall height. Depends on the driver - some people find it perfectly acceptable - other, completely intolerable. If the 16" or 17" sizes bother you, you'll probably want to stay away from the 18" ones. Tire/wheel section width is not that much wider than some aftermarket setups in the 16" or 17" size - you only have the extra weight / rotational inertia to deal with for fuel economy considerations. In my 2009 - I've seen mileage anywhere from low 18s to upper 20s. Highest being a hair above 30MPG, low being around 17MPG, average between 20MPG (all city) to 24MPG (almost all highway). Tire availability in the 215/45R18 size is not stellar either, only a handful are out there, so you won't have as many choices to price shop / pick from compared to the smaller sizes - so keep that in mind for future tire purchases.
