I am considering purchasing a new Avalon. I was wondering what type of fuel Toyota recommends and what type do you folks put into your Avalon's?
I thought I read somewhere, maybe car and driver, that it needs premium. Do any of you put regular in it? Sorry for such a newbie question, I am a new member.

the user manual "recommend premium unlead fuel" but sure u can feed it with lowest grade
however....I treat my 00' avy premium fuel (91')... it makes my avy more powerful to accelerate
and... from my personal opinion, premium gives ur avy longer drive range, more than regular ones...
consider u need a certain amount of fuel to accelerate up to 60 mph, say u push on gas padel for 8.5 sec to go up to 60 mph, but 91' fuel only need like 7.0~7.5 sec to do so, mean while, u have wasted approx. 1 sec of pushing the gas into engine... imagine how much fuel it has been injected into engine room for 1 sec...?
my avy's record for a tank of 91' fuel is 623km, but only 587 km when using 87'....
My dealer service department told me to use only regular grade gasoline instead of the premium in my 02 Avalon. They advise that it causes less deposits in the combustion chamber and fewer problems. I have tried both premium and regular and can not tell any difference in performace. I am not concerned with having the maximum power so I can not say if it makes a difference or not. Try it and see for yourself. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN PRICE!!!

We use 87 in our 00. I think the ecu can take advantage of the 93, but it's not neccessary, meaning that if you do use 93, the engine will advnace timing so as to take advantage and give better performance. But if you use 87 (which is the minimum required, while 91 is reccomended), the timing will be retarded and teh car will run just fine.
Thanks to everyone that posted. I haven't purchased one yet, I am considering a brand new Avalon. I would prefer to use regular unleaded because of the price difference. Would any one else like to share their thoughts?
they recommend premium, however it will alter its timing when it senses knock if you use regular. The horsepower reduction on the '06 is part of the new SAE standards that call for HP determination on the lowest recommended grade. Same engine, different standards. I personally use premium because I have found on prior cars that you will get better performance, since the timing will adjust to the higher grade, and you will also get better fuel economy on the order of 10% in magazine tests. Try a full tank of each, and decide for yourself. At 3.10 versus 3.30 a gallon, you're only saving about $3.50 on a tankful.

exactly, you're not saving that much. However, you don't neccessarily get better mileage, it depends on teh car. I'd assume on the avalon you would, because tehy have a very advanced ecu that can advance/retard timing like you said
Around town with very little freeway it runs between 22-24.5 MPG. IT depends on how many ricers I'm trying to impress while leaving the stop lights. If I make a long freeway trip it is 30 MPG.
A couple of us tested when the cars were new to see if MPG varied with octane rating, it did not. Oh, I run 35 PSI tire pressure instead of the recommended 32.
I have a 2005 Limited and alternate between premium & regular. The car runs fine on both, but you do notice a performance difference between them. According to my dealer & service manager, regular is fine.
I went on a long trip at the end of Feb.- Mar. From Los Angeles to Texas and back. (San Antonio, Austin, Houston and back home) Dam that was far! But I enjoyed it.
This Avy. did great! I did an average of high 27's to low 28's MPG @ speed's of 75 to 80's MPH. City driving was 22's to 23's MPG and this was useing low grade oct. gas (87). Texas has much better gas than we do. Thats besides lower prices too. I tryed once to drive Grand-pa Style (with no offence to the elders) more or less 60-65 MPH. To my supprise I got up to 34.7 MPG. It felt like I was driveing a v6 Hybrid.
It may have went higher, but I did'nt have the patience to keep it up and said the heck with this. That was with a full loaded car, passengers and luggages.
terrific mileage 24-25 mpg for city type driving and a consstant 70-75 on freeway trips yields about 30 mpg. I drive briskly and don't pamper this car. Very satisfied with mileage and the ability to use 87 octane. No performance improvement that I could determine with 93 octane. My cumulative dash guage will often be at 31-32 mpg for a while until I hve some stops and starts....
I never seem to get better than 16 to 18 mpg. I do almost all city driving. I guessing I just have a lead foot.
