In Australia ou engine year models are different to yours but the car I am talking about is avalon 2001 but AU and is different to American 2001,and is not VVTi
Does anyone know the definitive answer to the question,Are pre VVTi 1MZ-FE engines non interference and the later VVTi engines interference
My problem is that no matter how much research I d I get conflicting answers from all and sundry but can not find documented proof and I can not find how to ask engine specialists from toyota, mabee If I spoke Japanese ?
I have asked service techs in Australian toyota agents and get conflicting answers even one who screamed down the phone at me that that if the belt broke I would definitely get damaged pistons and another quieter tech at a different depot that said that it was a freewheeling engine IE.non interference and backed up by his boss.
OK, you need a Toyota engine specialist, you got one.
Definitive answer (for Toyotas):
If it is a 4 or 6 and has a timing belt, it is NON interference. VVTi doesn't matter.
If it is a 4 or 6 with a chain, it IS interference. VVTi doesn't matter.
If it is a V8, it is interference regardless.
Period.
The end.
Hope this helps.
Interesting. I would've sworn I read somewhere that the VVTi version of the 1MZ was interference. But the Gates timing belt catalog corroborates what you said. Thanks Protech!!
Minor, pedantic exception: There's a 4 cylinder used in the late 80's/early 90's Tercel that's interference, according to the Gates catalog.
Never heard that on the Tercel. What I quoted was always quoted to me as Gospel. The reason the VVTi doesn't matter is that all it affects is the cam timing. In order to become interference, the valve size or clearance to piston would have to change, because on a non-interference engine timing doesn't matter in that regard. To add VVTi, to a 1MZ, pretty much all they did was change the heads for oil flow and VVTi gear clearance and add the hardware, but valve size angle and all that other good stuff didn't change.
