Help>>>Has anyone pulled there JBL synthesis with NAV to see how to plug into the Video in the NAV for a backup camera. I can't see back too well and liked this option on the Lexus. I really need some guidance since most manufacturers are not sure I have the additional inputs in this system. Toyota SE div has backup cam in the rear view mirror....I want it on my NAV if possible its bigger screen

In it there are two Web sites with aftermarket packages that interface to the Avalon NAV. One forum participant, inov8r, is preparing to install one of these systems, and I will be doing so in a couple months. I believe it's a matter of plugging some cables into a box in the trunk, then mounting a camera somewhere on the rear of the vehicle. To me, the latter will be the biggest problem. The easy way is with a camera built into a license plate frame, but they look kind of clunky. The more difficult way is by drilling a hole through the bumper or the trunk lid.
I will post on this matter as I get going on it, but that won't be till July, as we are planning a trip.
i WOULD APPRECIATE THE INFORMATION..WHEN COMPLETED AND PICS IF POSSIBLE. cOST IS ALSO NICE. I struck a tree backing up yesterday...no damage to bumper. So I am ready. thanks n

Neil,
Actually, I'm waiting for another forum member to pave the way! His handle is
inov8. He has an '05 Avalon, so I'm not sure his car is exactly the same as our '06s,
but should be very close.
neil5, The DVD drive is located behind and below the left trunk trim panel. See this file for hints on how to access it. There is a photo on page 5 the drive. http://members.cox.net/n0v8or/avalon_awell_install.pdf In case you have to type in the URL, the words in the filemane are separated by underscore characters. I tested my reverse-image camera last night by connecting it to a 12V battery and a TV set. I bought he model on eBay that includes a ring of LEDs for night illumination (~$37). Even in complete darkness, I could see objects 20 feet away. This might be an overkill, as the reverse lamps should provide adequate illumination, I would think.
This is the camera I purchased: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Super...39658102QQrdZ1 If the above link doesn't work, go to www.ebay.com, then enter "reverse camera"in the search box. On the next screen, look for the "V2" 2.8mM camera with IR night vision. Typical of inexpensive wide-anle lenses, there is some barrel distortion (a fancy term for image curvature) at the outer edges of the image, but not bad enough to bother me. The video interface unit I purchased is identical to the one pictured on the GNET site except yellow in color and $100 less expensive. The Florida company I ordered it from, unfortunately, seems to have vanished from the face of the earth (or at least the Internet).
I am tring to figure out when to purchase and who to install. I want the license frame camera so as not to drill into car. How are you going to mount the camera? Do you have any install pics?

Look for stores specializing in aftermarket auto A/V equipment. In our area there is one called Al & Ed's. They showed me the license frame camera. I expect a store like this could also sell the GNET interface and install the package. My guess is the installation would cost $200. However, if you go with the farme camera installation should be very easy to do yourself.
I had the good luck of chatting with Technical expert for south eastern toyota distrib. He was nice enought to check to see if the harness is ready for backup cam, as a factory install. He JM offers this. I will let you know, otherwise its G-net system with someone's camera. How are you going to install in the rear? Are you drilling for the camera? or License plate one?
I intend to drill, as my camera is about 1" diameter x 2" long. Keep in mind that, even if you use a camera integrated into a license plate frame, you will still probably have to drill a hole to get the power and video wires into the trunk area. Fortunately, that hole won't be in a visible location.
The pdf on the Av. Backup sensor installation showed the wires for the back up lights going out the hole , I have assumed that I could send the cam wires out this same hole
