Avalon 98 wheels&tires upgrade

Hi all,
Does anybody know if the 98 Avalon would take 225/55 16 tires? I've read somewhere on the net that the 98 Avalon cannot take the true "Plus One" wheels&tires upgrade but without any further explanation so I'm confused. Please help me since I'm about to purchase the upgrades but am not sure if they'll work.
Thanks very much.

Biggest problem is the lack of rear strut clearance, you need to get the right offset. 225's are probably too wide to fit without spacers. I have 215/50/17's on my '99 on Lexus IS300 rims and they barely fit without spacers.

wheel offset questions

Thanks sloopercat for the info. What offset do oyur wheels have? In general, should the offset increase or decrease when you want wider tires? I'm now looking at some 17' wheels with +35mm offset to go with 215/50 17 tires. Would this work on a 98 Avalon?
Thanks again for your help.
