96-97 avalon R2 R3 plug

Hi people, my avalon doesn't have CD player or changer, it's a single deck cassete player. Just wondering if it has the amp because i couldn't locate the R2 and R3 plus to plug to my harness for my aftermarket headunit. The plug is one single plug but my harness has 2 plugs. need advises, thanks

Are you saying the original Toyota wiring harness has two plugs?

On the 4 speaker setup, these plugs are R2 and R3. R2 has 6 pins and R3 has 10.

The other stereo setup also has R2 and R3. R2 has 12 pins. R3 has 15. The amp would be located around the glove compartment area.

Did the original Toyota radio have two plugs or one (exluding the round CD plug)? And how many pins in each plug?

Some 96 radios (with internal amp) had a single 15 pin plug.

Are you putting in a head unit for use with an external amplifier? Are you adding a harness?

In some cars, Toyota used a single 15-pin plug harness. Toyota also used a 2-plug harness, one plug had 10 pins, the other 6 pins.

Toyota also used a 2-plug harness for a radio having an external amplifier. It appears this setup had two plugs, 12 and 15 pins.

If your original Toyota harness has a 15-pin plug, and your radio has 2-plugs, 10 and 6 pins. You will need an adaptor. Unfortunately I can only find adapters going from a 15-pin plug to non-connected wires, and the 2-plugs system going to non-connected wires.

These were found at web sites, Ride Revolution and Discount Car Stereo.

As Toyota used the 15-pin plug often, there might be an adapter having plugs at both ends. This would go from the 15 pin plug, to the two plug system. I suggest you call around to car radio places that also do installation and tell them what you have. I am sure they ran into this situation before.

It is also possible to obtain a 15-pin plug with wires and splice this into what you have now. When doing so, don’t assume Toyota used standard wire colors such as red for power. They didn’t.

www.installdr.com has the color codes for a 2-plug (10) and (6) pin harness.

If your situation is differant then what is described, post back.

However, when I installed my sister's 02 camry, it is also a 15pin or 20pin plug i forgot, but there is a OEM adapter that is hiding in the back of the stereo, you can just unplug 10pin and 6pin that go along with the 15pin and connect you aftermarket 10pin and 6pin to the back. I am just wondering if the 96 avalon design in the same way or that 15 pin plug just runs out directly from the amp.

I can't answer you question. The 15-pin plug was in an Avalon without an amp.

Is this a factory Toyota or JBL setup? Does it have an amp?

I suggest you go to the Camry forum section, find the location where the shop manuals are and look at the wiring diagrams for this year car. I would think they would be the same. You can then match wire colors and locations on the plug.

I can see how this would be the easiest route. Keep in mind Toyota did not use standard wiring colors. As such red may not be power. Go to www.installdr.com to see what colors were used for which circuit. I would also do some spot checking with a volt/ohm meter if you have one.
