95 outside temperature probe troubleshooting procedure

I spend most of my time on the Camry forum. I am asking this for a friend who has a 95 Avalon. His outside temperature display is not working. I now know the sensor itself is located near the passenger side headlight, but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this system. Does anybody know the procedure? Has anybody done this before?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

I can pull up a wiring diagram and perhaps diagnostic and sensor test info for the climate control system. Have you found the sensor and checked for damage, loose wires, etc? From what I can tell it is in front of the radiator. It is about the same height as the passenger headlight, but 3-4 inches toward the driver’s side.

What does the cars temperature display indicate when switched to outside air? Does the inside temperature sensor work? Any other symptoms beside the non-working sensor?

I'm not sure. I wasn't even aware there was an inside display too, as this is not my car and I am doing this from verbal information over the phone. I will try to find out and post back. Thanks for responding.

I spoke to the owner of the car. It normally only displays the "outside temperature" on the display. Right now there is no reading there next to "outside temperature".

Does anybody know how to troubleshoot the system?

Does this car(s) have a seperate temp readout indicator just for the outside air? Or does the indicator switch between inside and outside temp as part of the climate control system? Can you get anything to display on the indicator?
