One O2 vendor site lists different O2 sensors for Calif ($160) and excl-Calif ($80) emissions systems.
The sticker under the hood of my 99 Avalon says the car meets California emissions requirements.
Just to be sure, I checked my VIN with Totota customer support, which confirmed my car meets Calif emission requirements.
Toyota's tech support told the customer service rep that the O2 sensors are the same, only the warranty is different. (I took that to mean that sellers are at higher risk for having to replace bad sensors.)
Based on the info from Toyota, I ordered the $80 sensor on-line.
About 10 minutes later, I got a call from the vendor. Since I was from Massachusetts, he wanted to make sure I didn't have a car that meets Calif. emissions, because the sensors are different.
I told him what Toyota said about the 'different' sensors.
He said that the Calif sensor is an Air Fuel Ratio sensor and is different from the Oxygen Sensor in the non-Calif system. He said I might be able to install the sensor in the manifold or pipe, but the connector wouldn't mate.
Anybody know if they are really different?
Thanks.
