Calif vs Non-Calif O2 Sensor - Same?

One O2 vendor site lists different O2 sensors for Calif ($160) and excl-Calif ($80) emissions systems.

The sticker under the hood of my 99 Avalon says the car meets California emissions requirements.

Just to be sure, I checked my VIN with Totota customer support, which confirmed my car meets Calif emission requirements.

Toyota's tech support told the customer service rep that the O2 sensors are the same, only the warranty is different. (I took that to mean that sellers are at higher risk for having to replace bad sensors.)

Based on the info from Toyota, I ordered the $80 sensor on-line.

About 10 minutes later, I got a call from the vendor. Since I was from Massachusetts, he wanted to make sure I didn't have a car that meets Calif. emissions, because the sensors are different.

I told him what Toyota said about the 'different' sensors.

He said that the Calif sensor is an Air Fuel Ratio sensor and is different from the Oxygen Sensor in the non-Calif system. He said I might be able to install the sensor in the manifold or pipe, but the connector wouldn't mate.

Anybody know if they are really different?

Thanks.

Most 49 state cars do meet California standards. An O2 sensor and an Air Fuel sensor are the same, but different. The AF sensor has a broader range of response then the O2 sensor. In order for your Cal engine to operate as designed, it needs an AF sensor.

As to if the Toyota AF and O2 sensors are the same, but just packaged different, can’t say. I have not heard this before. This would mean the Toyota ECU would be adaptable to either sensor. I suggest you go down to the Toyota dealer and get this in person.

Read the link below, it references Toyota AF and O2 sensor differences.

Thanks to toyomoho. The technical information in and via the link you cited is excellent!

I called Toyota back and explained that they gave me bad info, yesterday. The very nice lady thanked me for the feedback, but said their tech support must not have heard the question right. <sigh>

Glad you got it straightened out. In these situations, it is often best to track down the info and see for oneself.
