changed battery and cant stop alarm

Changed out a battery on my 97 avalon and the alarm went off. Could not start the car nor shut off the alarm. We do not have a remote. The manual said to lock all the doors then wait and unlock a door using the key. That didnt work. Tried holding in the red alarm button on the dash while turning the ignition on. Did not make a difference. Just to get it to start so we could get home, I took out the fuse for the ignition. Then started the engine. Would not shift from park unless the fuse was put back in. After shifting from park we pulled the fuse out to stop the alarm from sounding. Managed to drive home. We put the ignition fuse back in and the same problem: Attempting to unlock a door sets of the alarm and the car wont start.

We just want to disable the alarm entirely, this car is too old for anyone to steal. We have not set the alarm in about 3 years and dont have the mechanism to do so.

Thanks for any help.

Try pulling out the leads to the horn first while you're troubleshooting. That way, it won't be much of a bother while you try to figure it out.

is it a factory installed alarm? could it be it's an aftermarket system, such as viper or someone? if it's aftermarket...there may be a toggle switch under the hood somewhere, or a button under the driverside dash.... i've heard of aftermarket systems that will do that when the battery is disconnected.
