Question Octane Fuel Question!

Hello there. I'm new here, I don't really drive a Toyota Avalon, but my friend does.. so I'm helping him find out about some things. Um.. for an average 1st Gen Toyota Avalon V6 (1995-1999), does anyone know the optimal fuel you have to use? I know that on my Honda Accord V6 engine (J30A1), putting in 91 premium octane fuel doesn't boost performance but instead makes it worse. So I was wondering if anyone knew. Some times the factory default fuel isn't the best.

Thanks in advance.

it is designed to run on any octane level. toyota "recommends" premium. this is to obtain maximum performance. the engine has "knock" sensors. if the ecu detects knocking, it will retard the timing, causing slighly less power. if he is an agressive driver, it may be better to use premium for the full performance. most people just use 87 octane. i compromise and use the "plus" 89 octane since the station i fill at charges only 4 cents more for plus. my performance seems fine for my driving, and i get around 22 mpg around town.
