Some cooling systems can regulate coolant temperature remarkable well. On my Toyota, once the engine is warmed up, the temp gauge stays put regardless of driving conditions or outside air temp.
The coolant system has more then one sensor. If the coolant temp was too far out of specifications, the ECU might pick it up, then respond with a “check engine light.”
If you want to get into it, you will need an ohmmeter and test data for the gauge coolant sensor. Or you can just change the sensor. You can test the indicator gauge by grounding the coolant sensor wire, then seeing if the meter moves all the way into the “red.” Keep this test short! Otherwise you might damage the gauge.
The other thing to check for is the coolant fan(s) kicking in and out. If they are not on all the time, but cycle in stop and go traffic or times prolong idle, then the coolant system is most likely OK.
