1995 Avalon Remote Controls

My mother is giving me her 1995 Toyota Avalon and the two remote controls that come with the two sets of keys do not work. She paid the dealership to put new batteries in it but it will not work even with new batteries. According to the dealership, getting new ones will cost $100 each.

Is there any way that I can replace them without spending so much money?

first you need to make sure that it is the remotes that are bad. it is possible along the way that the cars computer lost the programming for the remotes. i don't know the program steps for a '95, however you may be able to search this and other forums to find this. it is also possible that the dealer will need to re-program the computer. i've also seen program instructions on ebay while searching for remotes. if you feel you need new remotes, again, try ebay. i've purchased one on ebay for about $18 including shipping.....beats the heck out of dealer pricing. generally, when you purchase one, they will also give you the programing instructions.

If I purchased the factory service manual, would it contain instructions as to how to reprogram the Avalon's computer?

Shinning,

Yes, the factory manual has a 5 step process with pictures for reprogramming a transmitter. I have not tried it.

The manual in general is much better than Haynes, etc. but still leaves a lot out. The best use I have gotten out of it is to recognize what I can't do myself.

Check the simple things first - are the batteries actually good, are the battery contact surfaces clean, & are both batteries installed correctly?

Good luck!

Tom

If it is an RS3000 Toyota system installed at the factory the "brain" for the system is under the pass seat. I just programmed one I bought for my '99. It involves turning the key to the on position, then press the little button on the side of the brain till the red light on the dash flashes, then quickly (within 5 seconds) push the button on the remote. You have to turn the key back off to test the remote. My car came with the owner's manual for the remote.

I got mine off Ebay for $25. It may be some other problem besides the remotes, it would seem oddd that both failed. Try the programming steps first.
