Avalons a Well Kept Value Secret?

I just bought a very used Camry for son ... while continuing to search I noted that Avalons of the same age appeared to be very close to the same price as the Camrys ... am I missing something?

I have always been impressed with the ride and build quality - had heard maintenance can be an issue ...

Are there some "good years" to look for in the $10,000 plus or minus $2K range? What years and features, engines, etc should be avoided?

I always buy from individuals - after careful search ...

Thanks!!

I recently bought a used one and was somewhat disappointed by suspension issues and handling. Overall they are like Buicks. Now I have a minivan, it is more functional for me. I still think there is a reason for Camrys and Accords to be in high demand.

I own a 2000 Avalon. I am well pleased with it. The only problems I've had with it is the check engine light came on. Thanks to Toyota Nation I solve that problem. You can find my fix under "VSC and Check engine light ". Posted 9-11-05. The problem didn't cost me a penny, just a little time and effort.

It has 95,000 on it now and still run and rides good.
I paid $12000 for it when it had 73,000 on it.

Good luck and God Bless.

I have a 2000 with 176,000 miles on it and is still runs like new. My interior is shot, but the engine, tranny, and suspension are still usable. I am hoping to get 210,000mi on it, then I might but another 2000-2002 Avi with low miles.

I have seen and heard that the 2000-2002 are the best years for the 2nd generation Avalons. 03-04 were poorly made and the 05-now are also very well made.

My Mom has a 1995 Avalon (I drove it for 2 years...I miss that car) with 218,000 miles on it. We paid $4,400 for it 4 years ago. Since I drive it for 2 years, keep in mind that I had it redlining at 80MPH in second gear every time I pulled onto the highway.

CV Joint Boots
Left rear brake disc/caliper
Rear struts
1 Oxygen sensor
Right rear ABS sensor is now on the fritz

Thats the list of things that have gone wrong with the car. 2 other things however, the power antenna (bent while extended) and the catalytic converter needed replacement. However, the catalytic converted had a protective cover missing exposing it to new england road salt. Speaking of which, there is no indication of rust anywhere on the body, even where the hood has been chipped by rocks.

The engine and transmission still run strong. It has lost some power, but I think the engine needs to be carbon cleaned. Also, the transmission ran for roughly 30,000 miles with an almost completely clogged filter...to the point where it would skip second. After a complete fluid flush, it ran like new.

Also, with the way my mother drives, she averages 31MPG (50/50 city highway).

you're definately right, it is a used car value. the camry is such a popular car that it brings igher prices in the used market than similar honda's, mazda's etc. i've been helping a friend shop around, and you can get an avalon for the same price as comparable year and mileage camriy's. 8 to 10k should bring low mileage 98 to around 80k mile 2000. for 12k look for a low mileage 2000 to 2001.

I bought a 2001 Avi with 58,000 mi. for $13,500.00. It is in "mint" condition and I am very impressed with it. The second week I had it I put 1900 mi. on it going to Atlanta and back. It performed just as I hoped it would. The fit and finish is impressive to me also. Nothing else came close for the price. My plan is to put 200,000 mi. on it and then move to a 2005 Avi.

My buddy has a 1997 with around 98,000 on it, and it runs like new. He has not required anything but standard maintenance on it. I recently purchased a 1996 Avalon for myself. For a 10 year old car, I got it last month with only 45,980 miles on it for $5,000. It runs and drives like a dream. If you can find a low mileage Generation 1 (if you don't mind the looks or anything) I would definitely recommend it. Not that it didn't shift smoothly before, but I just changed the transmission / diffrential fluid and it shifts smoother than even the Mercedes Benz I used to drive of my father's. I would give the Toyota Avalon two thumbs up!

I don't think you can beat the value. But then again, just my $0.02.
