Hi guys i have a question

Hello i am new here and i have a question about my dad's 99 avalon. For some odd reason when it rains there is water in his trunk area especially where the spare tire is placed.. the water does not drain out also unless we take it out it just sits there. Anyone know the reason why this happens or where the leak is because we have tried looking for leaks but cant seem to find it. Thanks alot!!

Hello there. Welcome to TN. Glad your here. As for the leak in the trunk, Toyota has a service bulletin on it I believe. I will go through my bulletins to see if I have it. If I do, send me your email in a private message and I will send it to you.

I am truly sorry. The service bulletin covers trunk leaks for different vehicles including a 01 avy. 99 isn't mentioned. And since 01 is Gen 2 and 99 is Gen 1 they aren't similar enough to use. Again I'm sorry.

Take your garden hose out and see where it is leaking. Just guessing but I would say it would be a weatherstripping leak. Go get some weatherstipping glue and see if you can fix it. The glue dries very quickly and works well. Good luck.

Gen1 RE: 99 Trunk Leak

I scanned the whole avalon forum for trunk leak and got several entries. The one that seems to match your situation is this link:

I hope it leads to a solution.

mine leaked. There is a twisty tie holding the wiring harness for the rear lights on the left side arm that hold the trunk lid. It came loose and grabbed the weather stripping/rubber boot on the upper left hand side of the trunk space. I reattached the wiring harness, straightened out the rubber boot, and have not leaked since.

Check it out on yours.

You also might try pulling the trunk seal off and rotating it 180 degrees from where it sits, the rear vertical surface gets a lot of wear. I finally cured the leak by replacing that seal. My left side well also filled up, I ended up caulking around that vent in that well, both in and out to stop that leak, there is no good way to remove that vent/flap piece and replace the seal around that vent.
