1998 Avalon Electrical Gremlin

My daighter and friends recently jumped her 98 Avalon. I am pretty sure the did some fuse damage. When I got to the car, put in a new battery. It would crank, but not start. Fuel pump fuse blown. I replaced it and it started just fine.

However, mauch of the interior has no power. Headlights o.k. Shift lock not operating, no a/c fan, no istrument power, no radio, no pwr windows, no alarm.

Any ideas on how to get the car from college to home? There must be a fuse or two I have'nt found yet.

Thanks for the assist.

Check all the fuses... start with the main ones under the hood.... after those are all checked and replaced go to tthe ones under the drivers side dash

The car has several fuse box locations. Engine compartment has a least two and one is behind front dash, driver’s side near where you knee would be. There might be an ashtray there. The fuses below are in one of these fuse boxes. The owner’s manuals will have the location of specific fuses.

Might check the following fuses:

Interior lights = Dome fuse.

Shift lock = CIG/RADIO (or CIG), ECU-1G (if you have this fuse) and STOP fuses. See if the brakes lights work, if not check Stop Fuse. Shift interlock is tied into the brake light system.

If you cannot get the shift lock to work, remove a small tab on the shift console next to the shift lever. Then press on the white tab while pulling on the lever. This will release the lever. You will need to do this every time the lever is returned to the Park position.

A/C fan = HEATER and A/C Fuses

Instrument power = GAUGE Fuse

Radio = DOME, CIG/RADIO or RADIO or RADIO No1, RADIO No 2 (you will not have all of these fuses but at least 2).

PWR windows = POWER, DOOR, GAUGE fuses

Alarm = DOOR HORN, ECU-IG and DOME fuse

Suggest you pull each fuse and check it with an ohmmeter just to make sure it is good.

Next time you jump the car, turn OFF all accessories in both cars, turn OFF the car with good battery, turn ON headlights in car with dead battery (to minimize power surges), connect jumper cables and start car.

Got It!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I've beaten the beast.

It was the 120A fusible link in the main fuse area under the hood. It's the link closest the front of the car. It apparently feeds from the alternator to all accessories.

For anyone with the same problem: The link slides out through the bottom of the case, and is held with three screws onto the leads. More details if anyone needs. The symptoms are no juice to ANYTHING except motor, engine management and headlights.

Thanks again all....
