Need help finding a remote for my 96/97

I bought a 97 Toyota avalon a few weeks ago. At least I thought it was a 97, thats what the dealer told me. He hasn't given me the title yet. When I took the VIN to get a part this weekend, they said it was actually a 96. If that means the title says 97 but it was built in 96, I don't know.

I bought a remote off Ebay like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=200088543954

that is supposed to be for 97-99, but it doesn't work. I finally figured out how to get the car into programming mode (use the bulb-monitor harness in the trunk), but nothing happens when I press the buttons on the remote. Any tips on how I can find the correct remote on Ebay?

The one I bought, thats listed as working for 97-99, appears to be also listed on other auctions as being for 95-97 Avalons: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyot...em300093025901

So it really should work, shouldn't it? Maybe the remote is bad. I haven't opened it yet to check the battery.

Anyone? I'm getting ready to send the remote back because I can't get it working. I may just buy a whole new aftermarket keyless entry unit. What a PITA. I suppose I could go to a Toyota dealer and buy a remote from them. Could probably have an aftermarket unit installed for what they are going to want though.

I did open it up and test the batteries, they are good.

I found a PDF that sheds some light... I think I may have the wrong remote. Maybe all the ebay auctions are wrong? According to this PDF from Toyota, the 97 Avalon uses a funny looking two button remote (an RS3000 system)

first of all, you now have the title to your ride? Kind of akward that you bought a car without a title to it.

well, what model is your avalon? XL or XLS?
As reading some of the post the XLS model came standard with the keyless entry.
The XL was an option, first of all you should go back to the dealer and ask them when they got there hand on that car did it come with a remote? (just to bug them)

You can check it yourself, do a "search this forum" for remote key and see what do you have to look if the avalon came with the keyless option. (this link might help: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t177617.html)

You can PM Steve326a , he'll help you.

Good luck!

Yes I just got the title yesterday. Its not that rare to buy a car from a dealer without a title, sometimes they get the car before they receive the title. Its an XLS. I'm sending my 3-button remote back, I think I need a two button remote like in the picture above.

This thread http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t184480.html shows a two button remote for a 97 Avalon. I wish he would have mentioned if its an XL or an XLS.

And I did ask the dealer several times about a remote. He said he did not receive a remote with it.
