97 Avalon door speakers (pics)

I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions of what size the speakers are in the 97 avalon. Crutchfield says 4" but a few people on here have told me they are 5.25".

I was having a problem with water in the rear drivers side door, so I took it apart tonight. I thought I would take pictures so anyone who is interested could see what the speakers are like. They are rated 4 ohms, 20 watts.

Looks like they are mounted in a non-standard way, too, with three bolt holes. Would be interesting to see pictures from someone who has managed to replace the speakers.

Did you have any problems removing the inside door panel?
I need to get to the lock actuator on my wife's 98 Avalon because it is acting real sluggish.

The door panels are very easy to take off. Way easier than any GM panel I've taken off. I've never been able to get a GM door panel back on the way it was before I took it off.

I haven't taken off a front door panel yet, but for the rear - there are 4 screws, and one plastic button. Thats it.

Two screws in the arm rest, under the plastic caps that pop off. Two screws exposed at the bottom of the door panel. And one plastic button on the front of the door panel. When the door is shut, the button faces the front of the car. Just push the center of the button in, then pry the whole button out.

Then lift the panel straight up. I had to work mine back and forth, its clipped on pretty good. There is one plug going to the window switch that you'll need to unplug. The panel is surprisingly heavy, maybe thats the extra insulation of the XLS model.

a four in speaker in and of itself might not be too bad -- you see the baffle behind it, kind of like they were going for a big bose-like sound, that is why the jbl aftermarket speakers on mine, I think, sound so crappy. I think I need to get some of those foam skeaker baffles from crutchfield to be behind them, to stop the echo and hallow sound.

Has anyone done this and did it help.

I have heard some good sounds from a well-matched amp 4 inch speaker settup before. Just not in this living room interior.

added 5 1/4 inch speakers to the rear doors by using a rototool to open up the housing.

sounds much better and not very difficult to do if your handy with tools

Just replaced all 4 door speakers today. I have a 96 Avalon with th 6-speaker configuration. The front doors will DEFINITELY NOT hold anything more than a 4" speaker. I put in some Polk speakers all around. The clarity sounds much better. (Hmm... and besides the fact that apparantly all 4 speakers were blown.. ouch!)

I also put 5 1/4 speakers in the rear. I used a dremol to enlarge the opening and fit them in. I was wondering (from previous poster).. Did you use anything spedial to try and make a tight seal on the housing? I seem to get more bass response from the front 4" speakers. Who knows though, I have yet to hook up my aftermarket HU and AMP, so it might just not have enough power to drive them.

^^^Yup. Im having the same problem only in the rear passenger side door of my 95' Avalon, but it doesn't go that high. There is a lot of water but it doesnt go up to my motor to mess it up.

the water isnt up to the motor, lol, it is only about an inch or so high at any given time, but when there is an inch of water in the door and when you combine that with the florida heat, the humitidy and moisture in the door is what really got the motor.

i know the thread is a little old now, but how are the 5 1/4" working for you guys in the back doors? i just picked up a pair and am probally going to install them in a few days, any tips?? i am also going to replace my front door speakers, how do you get that darn window switch out of the front doors i tried for almost 2 hours (because i didnt want to break it) and chipped a piece of it off, do you pry on the top, bottom, inside, outside of it? i couldnt figure that out and that screw under it was the only thing holding the door panel on.

thanks in advance for the advice guys.
