What to get next?

So my 97 avy was hit while it was parked, whoever hit it hit a few other cars on the block and took off. Insurance called me on Friday and told me it was probably totalled. They'll send their own apraiser to look at the damage this week for a final ruling. http://public.fotki.com/j27lee/hit-and-run/

So the question now is, what car should I get now? The avy has been good to me. Any newer ones I should look at? I'm also considering the Camry, Matrix, and Rav4. New isn't really an option for me right now financially.

Thanks in advance!

It looks like whatever hit your car had a very high bumper and a little weight. Any large trucks passing through the area? Might read up on the newer Avalon and Camry, there are issues with transmission surge, a few complaints of quality, etc.

You need to be more specific on what your looking for in a car as well as a price. I can throw out anything from a Ferrari to a Geo Metro.

Ya, we figured it was a truck, but nobody saw anything. The police aren't going to pursue it cause there aren't any leads.

I heard about the transmission surge issue, but haven't looked into it too much. Not sure how much the insurance company will give me, but I'd be ok with putting in another $7-10k, so i figure between 15-18k total.

As for needs, I spend lots of time in the mountains camping, hiking, etc... so i'll be on dirt lots, but not off roading. I do drive people around quite a bit as about half my friends don't have cars. I also do few driving trips of anywhere from 3-10 hours about a dozen times a year.

We're looking seriously at the RAV4

Our 2001 Avalon is getting a little long in the tooth and the RAV4 is on the top of our list for a replacement. You can the V6 LE nicely equipped and they are a decent size now. Along that line would be a used Lexus RX 330. I see nice certified RX's listed for $35k so right in line with new Avalons and Highlanders. In cars, we're looking at the Camry and a used ES 330. I guess another Avalon isn't out of the question but they are kind-of boring me these days.

Sorry for the accident, but enjoy the search!

I would say a Matrix. They are fuel efficient, have a lot of rear room, comfortable, good ground clearance and fits your needs. Just not sure on the styling whether you like it or not.

I like it quite a bit... very very practical and better on gas. First tank through on city driving was just 25.9 mpg. I wish they put the 2.4L engine in these things though... It's a firmer ride than my avy, but feels much sportier, despite the weak engine... Once you get going though, it's fine.
