1998 Avalon Speaker Size

I have a 1998 Avalon with the stock 4 speaker setup on the doors and I was thinking about upgrading my audio system and I was wondering does anyone know what size the speakers are on the front doors and back doors

Thanks

They're all 4". If you get it sounding good post here what you did. I replaced all my speakers and the head unit.

Gen1 There is ONE 5" speaker that fits: POLK db501

According to Crutchfield there are lots of 4" speakers that fit 1st gen. avalons and one 5" -- the Polk db501. I guess after 4" the next size up is usually 5 1/4" (which wouldn't fit) but these are 5". They're new.
Polk says that "New Size 5 inch design affords easy installation into OEM factory spaces".

I just ordered 2 pair yesterday for my '95 Avalon XL with 4 speakers. Crutchfield has a buy one pair (89.99) and get the 2nd pair for 1/2 off deal. PLUS they have scratch and dents right now for $76.49 with the same 2nd pair 1/2 off deal so I got 4 for $114 plus shipping.

Let us know how they fit and how they sound. I think there's something up with the wiring in my car... the rears sound terrible. Swapping the speakers give the same result, so I know it's not the speakers.

Alright I'll let you know

What I want to do is buy a brand new deck and 4 brand new 4 icnh speakers and get them professionally installed, I am also planning on sticking in an amp and maybe a 12 inch subwoofer in the truck

Also Jaggrey, maybe you need to buy a new deck if you haven't already done so and if you still have the stock CD player

yea I have a Pioneer deck. I actually changed that before I changed all the speakers. The sound is good... not much bass but I can't really expect much from 4" speakers. The backs still sound really muddy tho. I tried swapping the fronts and the rears and that's when I discovered the speakers weren't the problem.

Did you install the speakers yourself?

No I had them installed. I swapped the fronts and the rears myself tho to test the speaker quality.

The Crutchfield guy spent some time on the phone with me telling me how to try and test if the positive and negatives were switched, which could create a situation where the speakers sound terrible. He suspected this when I described my sound as hollow because the previous owner had replaced the speakers. He suspected a negative and positive switch one one or more of the speakers, causing them to cancel each other out. There is a name for this, but I do not know it.

Rather than trying switching the speakers around, you might try switching the wires on the speakers. I know that I have pulling all the door covers off and tracing the wires on my wish to do list for when I have more time because of what this guy was telling me.

That's a good idea... I'll try that next time. Is the word for that out-of-phase?

When I got the Avalon everything was stock. It had the cassette head unit and the 3 disc cd changer. The speakers sounded all muddy and hollow in my car too. When I put in the Pioneer deck they sounded the same, so I know it's not the head unit. Then I tried swapping the speakers around and it sounded the same. What you're saying makes sense tho... and that's the only thing I didn't try.

Let me know when you try it and the end result, and I'll do the same!
