91 or higher Octane as stated in the owners manual. The 1MZ-FE was designed to run on premium, and will only achieve its rated power with premium. Also, your mileage will increase at least enough to cover the cost, if not more. For comparison, my mom's 95 Avalon gets a 7MPG increase going from 87 to premium.

I've been using 87 regular on My '99 xls since I bought it 3 years ago, and I haven't had any (I mean ANY)problems.... just make sure that you don't go to "Mom and Pop" gas stations because they'll probably have leaky tanks, and let water in. As far as using premium goes.... you could do that... but most of the Toyota mechanics at dealerships have told me the engine will run too hot with premium all the time, and just told me to use a fuel injector cleaner or Octane booster every 3 months...
I know the owners manual says premium, but consider this... I have a 2001 Honda Accord V6, which is supposed to be a more fuel efficient car, but on average, I get 2-3 more mpg from the Toyota than the Honda on a mix on HWY and city.

I agree, I use 87 regular and I don't see any difference in mileage really when using premium or regular. i only used premium when i needed to, when i had my s/c on. that's about all. i always use 76 or chevron, that's all...

also, the manual states a research octane number and just the octane rating, and the octane rating is what we go by on the fuel pumps, so by that method, our engines require 87...

use 87, i have been for the past 5 years in the car and not a single issue, like at all, i still have a ton of power, and for the extra 20 cents per gallon on average, it not worth the extra. dont necessarilly quote me, but you save 100 a year on average (with 12,000 mi avg.) on gas if you use 87 vs 93 ocatane.

AM/PM Regular 87 and STP Gas Treatment (4-pack $2.99 at Autozone) at each fill-up gives me the best performance and gas mileage. I also use Chevron Techron injector cleaner at each oil change and that also keeps things peppy. I tried using Chevron Premium gas but got better gas mileage and equal performance with the cheap regular and STP for way less $$$.

87octane, Tried 91 octane once or twice, no difference in power, gas mileage.
Gets 30 mpg on highway on 87 octane at steady 65mph.
Only additives to fuel is drygas in the wintertime maybe 1 bottle every other month.
