Gen1 OBD II code P-0500

I heard sort of a farting sound coming from the car when I was backing out of a parking spot yesterday... followed by the MIL lamp coming on steady. Ran the code, and it showed P-0500 which was a vehicle speed sensor malfunction. I didn't clear it, drove my car today... the telltale sign of a serious problem for this code I'm told is the speedometer not working properly. No problem there, and the light went out after about 5 cycles. Any idea how this might happen and how it automatically fixed itself?

Temporary glitch i suppose. It does happen some times. Usually when connector gets shifted around or you get a little moisture past the seal in a connector. If it dosent come back regularly I would worry about it too much.

The ECM needs two driving trips with the sensor malfunction to set the check engine light. If speedo is not working OK, the sensor is not working normally. Keep an eye on the speedo.

Thanks to all who replied, the MIL didn't come back on, so I think it must have been a one time electrical gremlin, don't know... I'll have my mechanic look at it when I take it to the shop next time.
