Hello, I have a 1999 Avalon with the premium stereo system that has the sub in the back.
I was thinking about upgrading my stereo system, but I don't know much about that kind of stuff. But a friend of mine does and he's been helping me. But there is one thing we're having problems figuring out. We were browsing around and read somewhere that there is a built in amp that powers the sub in the back.
Want I am wanting to do is replace the head unit with an aftermarket one and still be able to use the sub without buying anything else.
So my question is, if I replace just the headunit can I still use the sub without buying an aftermarket amp or anything else too expensive? If so, how would I go about doing this?
I am not 100% sure, but I would guess so. Why would you want to get a new headunit? The headunit is decent and the spearkers aren't bad. The sub is garbage though, I got 2 MTX without getting a new headunit or speakers.
TerminatoN, u can get a wiring harness from Circuit City called Metra 70-8121 or 12, its plug and play, very easy, it works great for mine, and yes u can still use ur factory SUB, mine is blown but it still works, planning on getting subs

Its decent, but its not very loud and the quality is crap at times. Plus mine is in pretty bad condition and looks terrible.
The plan on replacing the sub eventually as well, but its not my main priority, since I only listen to rock, I don't need a lot of bass.
I'm getting a Pioneer DEH-P80MP and four 4" Rock Fosgate T142C's. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I'll also be purchasing a CD-IB100II adapter for my iPod.

Circuit city wired it for 70 bucks I think. I bought a bass package which came with 2 12" mtx and an mtx amp. It was 300, I got a 4 year warranty. After everything it ending up being like 550. The sub in there now is garbage. And yes, my car bumps now. If you listen to a lot of rap I suggest it, but if you don't like a lot of bass then its not worht the cash. And I have the stock headunit. Everything works well, no problems yet, however stuff rattles. I had to put foam under teh stock sub box, because that rattled. The trunk rattles however you can't hear it up front. The back seats are messagers. If the windows are down you really can't hear the rattling though.
so today i switch out my HU and now it doesnt power on, i wired it the same way. its a kenwood kdc-x790 i dont know if im suppose to wire this HU in a diff. way or not, could anyone tell me what went wrong? fuse? i checked the fuse on the left side by the driver door its fine.

I've got an 1999 Avalon XLS and factory installed stero unit is broken (volume knob is gone, cd player broken). I have the 7 speaker set, inclusive of the sub in the back. (4 on front doors including tweeters, 2 on back doors, 1 bass behind back seat)
I am looking to replace it with an Alpine CDA-9884. Does anyone know iwhat issues I may run into?
How do I remove the trim from around the ignition on the XLS?
Will I need to purchase a seperate amp for the sub or will the correct wiring harness allow me to "plug and play"?

Wow, this is over a year old thread, you're lucky I'm subscribed to this thread.
Anyways, you shouldn't have an problems with any aftermarket stereo. The sub should work find, it should all be "plug and play". It won't sound like an aftermarket sub and amp, but it will sound the same (if not a little bit better) than it was with the stock head unit.
To take the trim off you kind of just have to pry it off. Its held in with tabs. I'd suggest getting one of those orange tool kits from Walmart, in there is a tool to help you take the trim off. Basically its just a tool to help you get under it and gain leverage to pull it off. Like I said, its just held in with tabs, no screws or anything, so its quite easy. Once the trim is off you'll see four screws holding the headunit it, unscrew those and you're good to go.
Just make sure that when you put the trim back on you reconnect the four way flasher button, air conditioning buttons and the tubs thats next to the ignition.
